The Whipper is an Apex zombie featured in Dead Island 2's SoLA DLC. Whippers are new type of apex variants found exclusively in SoLA festival.
Overview[]
Whippers are zombies who are perpetually aggressive to the point where they engage in heavy self-mutilation. They have their own intestines, taken out from their stomach, wrapped around their left arm. They use these intestines to attack from range. They are also capable of disabling the player's Fury Mode while going into a rage themselves.
Similar to Runners, they are not experiencing the later stages of decomposition, aside from the injuries from their self-mutilation habits, and highly aggressive. It can be suggested that they are recently-turned zombies much like Runners.
Appearace[]
Whippers can be identified as women who have mutilated themselves by having scratches on their faces and across the body, and having their own intestines wrapping around their left arm, which they use as their weapon. Their stomach are exposed and there are still most of their intestines inside, albeit hanging around, which are still connected to the intestines on their left arm.
Attack patterns[]
Whippers use a different attack pattern, based on if they are enraged or not. Their attacks consist of swings with their non-entangled arm, whipping with their entangled arm and throwing mutated innards. At level 30 each normal arm swing deals ~338 damage, every whip swing (calm and enraged) deals ~450 damage and each mutated innard deals anywhere between 300 to 360 damage were damage of the innards is further reduced based on proximity. Each attack will also deal damage to other zombies. The whip deals sharp weapon type damage. When not enraged they have the following attack pattern. They will also periodically idle while agonizing over their mutilated body.
When the player is very close to the Whipper, they typically run up and perform a swing with their right arm or occasionally perform any of multiple whipping combos. If the player is close behind them instead, then they turn around with a swing from their normal arm or rarely swing their whip twice behind them.
When the player is at a medium distance from the Whipper, they choose from one of the following whipping combos, seemingly at random. Getting hit by the whip will knock the player back, outside of the range of the Whipper's whip.
- To be added
If the player is beyond the reach of the whipping attacks, the Whipper will throw her mutated innards at the player. She grabs 3 innards and throws them towards the player. The innards then explode in a fairly large radius. If hit by an innard, the player is blinded which greatly reduces their ranged accuracy. This makes it more difficult to hit them with firearms, thus inviting the player back into melee range.
Whippers may become enraged under 3 circumstances: by being below 70% HP, by being near the player while they are in Fury Mode, or by being near a screaming Screamer. Whippers enraged by a Screamer will not muzzle the player and can enrage again through the other 2 methods, this time causing the player to become muzzled. While muzzled, Fury Mode is disabled and no further Fury can be gained. There is a cooldown before Whippers can enrage themselves again through the first 2 methods, thus giving a window in which Fury Mode can be used. When enraged Whippers use the following attack pattern.
When the player is very close to the Whipper, they rarely run up and perform a swing with their right arm. More commonly, they will perform 2 wide whipping attacks walking forward and backwards at the same time. Unlike their calm whipping attacks, these whip hits do NOT knock the player back into safety. Sometimes they may also perform their pounch combo (see below).
If the player is anywhere else, the Whipper will run after them and perform a pounch combo attack when in range. They jump at the player, slamming their whip down on them. They then perform 3 to 4 whipping attacks in quick succession infront of them, all without knockback. These follow up whipping attacks can be dodge by moving behind the Whipper. This also gives room to attack the whipper.

Notes[]
- The intestines wrapped up arm can be maimed to disable all whipping attacks and disable the possibilty to become enraged, thus making the remaining fight much easier. The intestines wrapped arm cannot be removed before the Whipper drops below 40% HP.
- Whippers are resistant to kinetic damage, taking 50% reduced damage from it. They do not have any elemental weaknesses nor resistances.
- Whippers take increase/reduced damage dependent on which body part is hit. In order of taking the most damage to least damage, the body parts are: back, whip and head, normal hand, torso, legs.
- It is possible to dodge into the whipping attacks without taking damage. Doing so will not stun the Whipper however. They are only stunned by a perfect dodge if the normal arm swing is dodged.
- Whippers will periodically enrage themselves when below 70% HP.
- Whippers are unaffected by the shockwave emitted when entering Fury Mode. This allows them to immediatly disable Fury Mode, if other conditions are met.

Trivia[]
- Whippers are second type of zombies in the game after Bursters, that can retain the ability to speak to a limited extent. However, while the Bursters appeared to be calling out for help, Whippers often yell aggressively at the slayers such as "Kill... You!" and "Just... DIE!".
- They are the first type of zombies that appeared in the SoLA DLC, instead of standard zombies.
- They have the same HP as Butchers.
