Weapon proficiencies are a new gameplay mechanic introduced in Dead Island: Riptide. As you gain kills and XP with a certain weapon type, it fills up an XP bar towards the next level of the proficiency. There are 10 levels for each weapon type and as you level up each proficiency, you become more deadly with that weapon type and make it easier to kill enemies with it.

- As standard, all heroes carry the same amount of Ammunition in reserve, being 50 Pistol Ammo, 60 Rifle Ammo and 20 Shotgun Ammo. However, with the final level of the firearms proficiency, this increases by 20% to 60 pistol ammo, 72 rifle ammo and 24 shotgun ammo.
