The Dirge is a special named version of the Clotter featured in the SoLA DLC for Dead Island 2. He is first encountered by the Slayers as they are trying to enter the Eco Lounge in SoLA.[1] He manifests along with two other Clotters to try and prevent the Slayers entering the Eco Lounge, however he leaves before the Slayers can attack him, letting the other two Clotters fight the Slayers themselves.[1] The Dirge continues to pursue the Slayers through SoLA, appearing at the SoLA Main Stage several times,[2][3] the Fury Experience,[2] Utopia,[4] and Sinamoi's[5] before finally being summoned to the Eclipse nightclub. The Dirge has a large fighting with the Slayers, but is finally defeated for good once The Beat is silenced at SoLA.
Overview[]
Like all Clotters, the Dirge is a tough and dangerous enemy. He can disappear into a pool of bones, blood, and mass and remanifest nearly anywhere he chooses. He is also able to regrow missing limbs and remove any status effects during this, too. He can make heavy, sweeping attacks at close range but also fire blood from the gaping mass in the center of his chest. Thankfully, while moving he is not fast, making manifestation his only method of getting around quickly.
Appearance[]
The Dirge has almost the same appearance as Clotters albeit taller, similarities being the pale grey skin and cataract eyes, with the major differences being the red tinged areas (mouth, hands and chest) are more bloody than the average Clotter. The strands of grey hair are shorter than the average Clotters.
The exposed organ on his chest is also unique, along with his face, the exposed chest organ has what appears to be bone growths (most likely ribs) digging into the organ. The Dirge's mouth is completely gone, revealing his teeth and blood stained gums, his facial skin sags all the way down to his chin and collar bone which adds to his already terrifying look.
Unlike the overlapping wrinkled layers skin Clotters have including less injuries, the Dirge has more overlapping and sagging skin and in general, a more grotesque appearance.
Behavior[]
The Dirge is highly aggressive, and will attack on sight and without warning. Thanks to possessing both melee and ranged attacks, he can attack from any distance he chooses. In order to keep up with and track down his target, he will manifest via a pool of blood and gore, or walk a short distance to reach them, with the sole aim of killing and destroying them. The Dirge does not appear to care about infecting his victims, rather killing them first and worrying about reanimation later. He posses some limited speech via telepathy, which he uses to speak to Numen like the Slayers.
Strategy[]
- The Dirge cannot be killed outside of the final fight, so do not waste energy or weapon durability fighting him before then. He will stay for a short time before disappearing by himself, so just dodge his attacks and focus on other enemies.
- As a Clotter, the Dirge is weak and strong to the same things. He is weak to weapons with the Cremator Mod and immune to Puncturator Mod weapons, including the Ripper. He takes greatly reduced damage from projectile (firearm) weapons which makes them a poor choice against him, even if they do have a Ranged Cremator Mod applied.
- Prior to the fight, stock up on Medkits to keep your health up. Various medkits can be found in Eclipse which can be collected during the fight, but they are limited in number unless a zombie you kill drops one.
- The Dirge is completely immune to any form of damage until you get an Orgone Ball and throw it at him while he is resonating with Orgone energy. Throwing an Orgone Ball at him while he is resonating will overload him and allow you to attack him by any means.
- During the fight phases where you need to overload a Mood Speaker, he will be immune to damage, despite following you around. Focus on overloading the speaker and avoid attacking him during this time.
- Once you destroy a speaker, he will teleport to the front stage, where you can throw the ball at him and attack him as normal.
- Avoid getting surrounded while overloading the speakers, as the Dirge will deal massive damage with his own attacks, which can easily lead to your death.
- During the fight phases with him, no more zombies will spawn until you need to overload another speaker. Some may follow you, however, to the front stage. Fight and kill them first, then deal with the Dirge.
- The Orgone Balls in the front speakers will constantly respawn during the fight phases, and throwing one at him will stun him temporarily, allowing you to get more hits on him. The balls will disappear once you need to overload another speaker set, but reappear on the next fight phase.
- Forcing the Dirge to do his ranged blood stream attack is actually a good way to get some easy damage on him. If you can run far enough away and listen for the audio cue of him doing his ranged attack, you can run to the side of him and sit there attacking him while he is doing his blood stream. So long as you are not behind him, he will complete his attack and not move, allowing you to get plenty of hits and charged attacks on him.
- Using the Molotov Cocktail curveball is a good idea for his fight, as it will do additional damage thanks to his weakness to fire. It is best used when he is stationary performing his ranged blood stream attack.
Trivia[]
- The Dirge is one of the few zombies that can talk, and is different from other by being fully intelligent.
- The Dirge seems to have a deeper connection to the Autophage than any numen.
