A Spade is type of blunt weapon found in Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide.
Overview[]
As a non-levelled basic weapon, Spades do not vary in stats, quality, or rarity, nor do they have any level requirement. In addition to this, they are also unable to be upgraded or repaired at a workbench, be modded with any weapon Mods or be changed in any way. They are pretty much useless after a couple of levels have been achieved and once the Resort has been reached where both Metal chests can be found and better weapons collected to replace any spades or basic weapons still in use. Their stats are pathetic, with about the same damage as Fists and a similar stamina usage. They're only good for killing a couple of Zombies before breaking and being automatically discarded by the hero. For a tough enemy like a Thug, a spade or any of its variants is wasted and a better weapon should be used.

Notes[]
- Owain in Saint Christopher's Church in Moresby requires a Spade for his side quest Six Feet Under. This has to be a spade, not any of its variants which is strange.
- Spades can be found in the Resort and Jungle areas of Banoi, appearing in a small number of locations. The Shovel variant can be found in more locations throughout Banoi, appearing in the Resort, Moresby, and the Jungle, as well as the Moresby Sewers. For more detailed locations where these spades can be found, see the quest page.
- It's possible to collect several spades and keep them in storage for this quest, so it can be completed nearly instantly for multiple playthroughs.
- Confusingly, the Shovel variant of the spade appears in Dead Island: Riptide, despite another weapon with the same name being present in that game as well. These non-levelled Shovels can be found in Henderson, inside a number of shops throughout the area.
- The shovel variant of the spade is slightly more common than the regular spade.
- The rusty variants of both the spade and shovel have slightly worse damage than their non-rusty counterparts, making them even more useless.
