The Sniper Rifle is a new firearm introduced in Dead Island: Riptide. It is a far more powerful but slower firing rifle acquired a good distance into the game, first appearing at the Pinai Ferry Station. After this they are usually bought from Merchants.
Overview[]
Sniper rifles are the most powerful type of rifle in the game based on raw damage alone. The rifles have a very high headshot multiplier which allows them to deal incredibly high amounts of damage to special infected or Boss Zombies, which makes those encounters a lot quicker and less stressful! A good rarity single shot rifle can one shot a Thug with a headshot, which is a very good feat indeed! The rifles do far more damage in a single bullet than any other rifle available in the game, and telescopic sights allows for Zombie killing from afar, a great distance away from the zombie's own detection range, which makes it an excellent weapon to keep on hand as it allows you to take out high threat enemies without being detected in return.
One of the major drawbacks of the snipers, however, is their low rate of fire and magazine size. Their damage and power comes at a price, which is poor crowd control. The semi-auto sniper somewhat mitigates this with a puny 5 round magazine and semi-automatic fire, but even so neither snipers are god at dealing with hordes. If you miss a shot at a zombie, especially with the bolt action sniper, the long reload could be the difference between life and death. In addition, due to the telescopic sights, neither sniper is good for close-medium range engagements, which limits their use in enclosed areas, such as Henderson, where the high buildings and thin streets give it very few areas suited to the snipers. Finally, they have no applicable weapon Mods, so no elemental effects can be added, unlike the normal range of rifles. Nevertheless, despite the drawbacks the snipers are excellent additions to the Heroes arsenal, with high damage for dealing with the many special infected and bosses, having a sniper on hand is a must for dangerous areas, such as Dead Zones.

The snipers are unable to equip any sort of weapon mod, making them one of the few weapons in the series with this property.

- Some merchants will sell various snipers.
- Zoey can sell a semi-auto sniper after completing the final level of her Team Quest Best Merchandise for Zoey.
- Nora at Henderson Military Base can sell both variants of the sniper rifle, but she only appears after completing the main Quest Militarized Zone.
- Rodrigo can sell bolt-action snipers from his shop in Henderson.
- A white rarity bolt-action sniper can be found on a sniper's perch at Palanai Ferry Station, just before the main station itself. It's also found with a couple of Meat Bait.
- The semi-auto sniper is the rarest rifle and firearm in the game, with no natural spawn locations and only two merchants selling it.
- Due to the introduction of the sniper rifle, the Single Shot Rifle became mostly obsolete, due to the Sniper Rifle mostly taking over its role. However, the Single Shot Rifle is not completely removed from the game, as it is possible to loot one from a metal chest or zombie. However, the chance of this is incredibly low.
