Siege events are specials quests encountered during Dead Island: Riptide in which the Hero must survive an onslaught of zombies in revolving waves. The waves of zombies consist primarily of Walkers and Infected, but will also contain special effected such as frenzied zombies, Thugs, Suiciders, Butchers, Floaters and Screamers. There's also usually at least one named special infected who appears during the final wave.

During the siege event, the Hero will have help from other survivors and the other Heroes in the group. Finishing Team Quests for the other survivors will increase their effectiveness during the siege events by upgrading their abilities and weapons. The Hero must also look out for other survivors being attacked by zombies. If a survivor or Hero is struggling with a zombie, a status icon will appear on the Hero's screen showing the survivor's location and status.

The siege area is generally an open, arena style location, usually surrounded by large entrances capable of being covered by fence. The Hero is usually given time prior to the siege event to prepare for the battle by upgrading weapons, looting metal chests, and placing fences. Once the Hero is ready, the event can be started. It always takes place at a safe house, as that's the area you want to defend.

Tactics[]

The best way to survive a siege is to plant mines wherever and whenever you can outside the safe zone. You can tell where the safe zone ends from where the metal fences can be put up. Lace the outside areas of the safe zone with mines whenever you get a chance. There's usually a small grace period between each wave that you can use to put up barricades or place down some mines. If you ever need more, there's usually several open wooden crates in the safe zone that contain extra mines or ammo.

Complete Zoey's side quest Electrifying to get electric fences. They are very useful and a great upgrade over the standard defensive fence you can put up for the hub. The side quest itself can be taken right after reaching Paradise Survival Camp and while it is fairly tricky, especially at a low level, it is worth it for the security it provides. Instead of the zombies just battering down the fences like normal, the improved shock fences will electrocute the zombie, giving you time to either deal with something else or use a firearm to kill it.

There's usually some propane tanks around the area that you can use to your advantage. Throw them at a special infected before quickly shooting it or throwing a weapon at it. This will easily take out the dangerous zombie, or a group of Walkers if they clump together. You gain two miniguns after the quest Heavy Equipment and they are used in siege defences onwards. They are a great boost to your firepower, as they can easily kill even dangerous high health special infected in just a few hits. However, you do have limited ammo in them and they can overheat, so use them wisely. Burst fire to conserve ammo and heat and only use them on high health enemies. They can also be moved around the area to certain other spots if you need to tactically move them.

Complete the team quests as much as you can. While they might seem pointless at first, when it comes to these siege events, having allies with good weapons is invaluable. You might think the AI would be useless, but they are actually rather useful in these circumstances. The weapons they get can actually deal decent damage and will kill zombies while you deal with something else. It makes your life easier and helps end the siege quicker overall.

  • Rams and Drowners are the only types of zombie that don't feature in a siege defence.
