A crowbar with the mod applied
The Shocking Crowbar Mod is a weapon mod featured in Dead Island, Ryder White's Campaign and Dead Island: Riptide. It was added to Dead Island in Patch 1.3. When crafted at a workbench, it adds heavy electrical damage and an impact effect on critical hits.
Overview[]
The Shocking Crowbar mod is an excellent, if limited, impact mod for most situations. While it is rather expensive to craft, requiring a heavy amount of mod items and Cash to make. However, the weapon produced at the end of it is a worthy upgrade. When used, it ups the damage as per usual but also adds a very potent impact effect and electrical critical damage. While not that useful for any of the special infected, the effect is very good for taking out Walkers and Infected, with the increased damage and impact effect. The mod has a rather high crit chance increase, one of the highest out of all the mods, meaning it crits a lot more than expected, which helps deal with hordes of zombies very quickly. When an impact mod crits, it deals a lot of shock damage and also ragdolls the enemy, sending them flying away at high speeds, where they usually crash into a wall which kills them if the initial hit fails to do so. This is not the case with high health or heavy enemies like a Thug or Wrestler, as they have to much health and weight that a critical hit will just deal a lot of damage instead unless it's the final hit, in which case it applies as normal. There is no substantial change in Dead Island: Riptide to the mod.
In Ryder White's Campaign, this mod is arguably the most useful of them all, being one of the three mods collected over the course of the DLC campaign that doesn't get placed into the inventory of the player at the start. While not the only true melee weapon mod available in the DLC, as this was the only one intended to be collected and used, it's the only melee weapon mod that can be regularly applied to a weapon, since the Ripper Mod is only available for Game of the Year editions or the Dead Island Definitive Collection where the mod items needed for it just don't appear in the DLC. As such, this will be the first mod crafted in the campaign and will serve any player well.
The mod has few drawbacks though the couple it does have are rather major, though not relating to its effectiveness or damage. While the mod it gives the weapon is powerful, the first major drawback is its overall cost, requiring a heavy amount of mod items to craft and also $1000, making it expensive to do so. While none of the mod items are particularly rare, a couple are in high demand, namely Duct Tape and Wire which are used in nearly every weapon mod, so having to use 3 each of them in this mod can cause problems if running low. Weight Plates are also somewhat hard to come by, which may hinder crafting the mod if in short supply. The other major sticking point is the fact that the mod is ONLY applicable to the Crowbar. This is not such a huge deal as crowbars are quite easy to come across, having multiple spawn locations, multiple Merchants sell them in varying rarities and they appear in Metal chests relatively frequently. However, if playing a character like Xian Mei, this mod is entirely useless because of it, since she is a sharp weapon specialist and this mod is only for a single type of blunt weapon. The only other option for a high damage impact mod is Magic Wand Mod or Lightning Mod which deal less damage but are available earlier and can be crafted for less cash and mod parts as well as being applicable for a far wider selection of weapons than just the crowbar. Overall, the mod is an excellent zombie killing weapon upgrade that deals massive damage and has an effective and hilarious critical effect but its limited weapon scope and high crafting cost may hinder its ability to be used very often.
