The Shock Mod is a weapon mod featured in Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide. When used at a Workbench, the mod adds light shock damage and an electrocution critical to most Bladed Weapons.

Overview[]

The shock mod is relatively easy to get hold of after starting the game, being acquired still during Act I and is impossible to miss, due to being a Quest reward. The mod can be seen as the Nail'd Mod for electric mods, as it's the first one acquired by the player, however it is quite significantly different. The mod is very cheap to craft at just $200, making it one of the cheapest mods in either game and is hardly going to break the bank. Whilst its mod item requirements are a little higher than other low-tier mods, requiring 6 mod items, they are all available in abundance and if short on any, there's a fair chance that the next Merchant you find will be selling at least one of the items. The biggest upside to this mod is its over abundance of applicable weapons, with nearly ever single sharp weapon being applicable for the mod. When applied, the mod adds a nice little damage buff and crit chance, with a decent critical effect of stopping a Zombie in its tracks with an electrocution effect, giving time to either escape, heal or get some free hits in. It's a very effective mod for the early/early-mid game as it can result in 1-hit decapitations in most encounters with basic zombies when used correctly. Visually, it attaches a battery pack and wires hooked up to the blade of whatever weapon it's applied to, making it feel a lot better to wield!

The mod was made a little better in Riptide, though not in terms of stats. The mod has the same crafting requirements, the same stats and same cost. However, its buff comes in the terms of applicable weapons, as several blunt weapons were added to its list of applicable weapons, which was a huge buff to the mod's importance and usefulness for certain characters. The mod was also available sooner if you travelled to and completed the Dead Zone holding it.

Its downside comes from the electric mods that supersedes it, mostly. Whilst the mod has an excellent array of applicable sharp weapons, all of its superior variants are also applicable to those weapons. This combined with the superior stats of its replacements deem the shock mod obsolete as the replacement mods, whilst more expensive, are just as universal and have superior stats and effects. Mods like the High Voltage Mod and Short-Circuit Mod have just an impressive weapon list but have better stats overall, making them better choices over the Shock Mod. They also use the same mod parts, which many other mods also use, making it a more worthwhile investment to use these resources on superior electric mods over the Shock Mod. Its other drawback is its exclusivity to sharp weapons, though this is a trait shared with other electric mods. Due to only being applicable to sharp weapons, the mod is only really useful to Xian Mei, the sharp weapons specialist, whilst other character such as Sam B who have no buffs to sharp weapons will find this mod quite useless. This problem was alleviated in Riptide, where all the electric mods, including the Shock Mod, were given applicable blunt weapons. Overall, the mod is a good alternative mod for the early/early-mid game, however is best replaced with superior electric based mods when they arrive.

I found that a piece of blade and some electricity is enough to stun one half-dead son of a bitch. All you have to do is use insulating tape to stick a battery and some wires to a shiv and… voila! – We’ve got a fancy toy.
In Dead Island, the mod is given by John Sinamoi upon finishing the main quest Black Hawk Down.
In Dead Island: Riptide, the mod is located inside the Ocean View Bungalows Dead Zone in Halai Village.
