Shadow Zombies are zombies featured in Escape Dead Island. They first appear during Cliff Calo's insanity episode at the marina pier of the marina.

Overview[]

Shadow zombies are unique in that they technically don't exist. Like Insanity zombies, they are a concept that Cliff made up due to his destabilising mind. However, these are far more crazy because while Insanity zombies look like normal zombies on the outside, Shadow zombies are almost like crystal or electrical forces. They still follow the behaviour of what they're trying to represent, but they look far different.

Appearance[]

Shadow zombies do not have a normal look of them. They have very little distinguishing features with no fact or clothes of any kind. They are made almost of a crystal looking substance, but it's more like an electrical interference, as they glitch and flicker while they exist.

Behaviour[]

They follow the behaviour of whatever they are portraying. If they're being a Shambler, they'll wander around like a Shambler and attack/move like one. Upon spotting Cliff, they will come for him like the normal zombie. The will attempt to scratch and attack Cliff when he's in range and will continue to do so until Cliff kills them.

Below is a table of the damage and health of all shadow zombies compared to their regular appearances.

Strategy[]

  • Despite their unique look, shadow zombies have no new moves, though they are far tougher than their regular counterparts.
    • One thing to note is that all shadow zombies have a far quicker and far greater spotting distance. They can spot Cliff from further away and their alert bar will fill up extremely rapidly, giving little time to duck into cover to break line of sight.
  • Shadow Shamblers are just as slow as normal ones and are therefore easy to get around and hack up like normal, so using a melee weapon like the katana is the best way to deal with them.
  • Shadow Sirens will still scream and leap like normal, so while tricky, they can be dealt with using the melee weapon as normal.
  • There's no environmental hazards in Cliff's mind, so there's no way of knocking them into one.
  • Don't bother wasting bullets on these zombies using a firearm like the shotgun. Save your ammo and hack them up the old fashioned way!
  • It is possible to stealth kill shadow zombies.

Zombie types[]

  • Shambler
  • Siren
  • Spitter
  • Infected
  • Butcher
  • Bouncer
  • Aaron Welles

Notes[]

  • Cliff refers to them as 'shadow zombies' when he meets them in the Crown Residence.
  • The zombies are colour coded to identify which zombie type they are. Shamblers are blue, Infected are white, Spitters are green, Bouncers are yellow and Butchers are pink.
  • The shadow Butcher fights are the hardest fights in the game, thanks to the massive health buff they get, the damage increase and the fact that they're often supported by other shadow zombies.
    • That said, there's a few fights with them that can be 'cheesed' for an easy win.
    • The first is during the first time you meet one during the final mission - Deliverance. When he lands, he has a very slow get up animation before he goes to normal. While in this getting up animation, he obviously can't block attacks like normal. The shotgun does massive damage at point blank range where all the pellets hit the target. You can easily get him down to a quarter health before he gets up fully, making the rest of the fight a breeze!
    • The other times are during the arena fights at the end of the mission. Thanks to the platform you're fighting on, there are no side walls. When the Butcher leaps at you, dodge out the way of it. It will overshoot you and go right over the edge, killing it instantly when it gets to a kill plain under the map. This counts towards the total zombie kills needed to complete that stage of the arena fight as well!
  • Aaron Welles is the only shadow zombie who is weaker than his 'real life' counterpart.
  • Taking a picture of a shadow zombie with the Camera gives Snapshot 58.

Trivia[]

  • Dwellers are the only zombie to not receive a shadow zombie counterpart. This is likely due to the fact that they were added with the Underwater Labs DLC and so had no reason to receive a shadow variant, since shadow zombies do not appear at all anywhere in the DLC.
