Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Hardy is a survivor featured in Dead Island: Riptide and serves as the games deuteragonist.
Overview[]
Lt. Colonel Hardy is a high ranking officer in the Australian Defence Force and is first encountered during the Prologue main Quest The Storm when the Heroes are taken prisoner aboard to the HMAS Avenger. While high ranking and in charge of the army detachment on the frigate, he was overruled by Frank Serpo, so incarcerates the Heroes for experimentation, despite his protests. When the outbreak on board occurs, Hardy organises the defences on the ship, including the defence of the helicopter hangar before finally joining the Heroes on the bridge to attempt to save the ship from crashing into the rocks.
He is missing when the heroes awake on Pearl Sands, so is assumed deceased by the heroes but is brought into Paradise Survival Camp by Harlow Jordan at the end of the main quest Back to Reality. At first the heroes want to take out their anger on Hardy but are finally calmed down by both him and the other survivors in the camp. After apologising for their treatment and that Serpo was calling the shots and not himself, he reveals that the island is planned to be nuked to wipe out the infection. This spurs the survivors to work together, for now, to escape to Henderson and find a boat to escape.
He remains in the camp with the other survivors while the heroes look for and escape to Henderson. He helps the survivors to defend the camp when it is attacked by Marcus Villa during the main quest The Ritual. He then travels to the Safe House at Halai Village with the survivors while a boat is found to travel to the Santa Maria Mission where the entrance to the Japanese Tunnels are found, their only ticket to Henderson. He travels with them to the Mission and after the pump the heroes get to pump out the tunnels entrance attracts a horde of zombies, he sees a way to help the group and get some heavy ordinance to defend the area. He tells them of a crashed helicopter with a pair of Miniguns that will help greatly with defend the camp in the future, starting the main quest Heavy Equipment. After the miniguns have been retrieved, he joins the defence of the mission with the other survivors until the entrance is pumped out.
He remains at the Mission until the heroes have found a path through the tunnels, remaining with the group until they arrive at Pinai Ferry Station. After the heroes clear out the prisoners at the ferry station, Hardy once again defends the area with the survivors until they can get the chain ferry across to Henderson, where he joins them. He protects the group while the heroes reach the Old Town Cinema and moves there with them.
He sees another opportunity to help the group by telling them about the Henderson Military Base where he knows the commander, Commander Briggs. If anyone can help, he can, starting the main quest Militarized Zone. However, his previous goodwill is undone when the heroes learn from Serpo that Hardy was lying about the nuclear strike on the island. Serpo is also sending a helicopter to rescue them. They argue with Hardy when they return to the cinema who justifies his actions as being the only way to get them to move and reach Henderson before quickly distracting them by telling them that they need to do something to attract the helicopter's attention to the roof of the cinema. He suggests burning some of the film reels to make a smoke column that the helicopter can home in on and after some persuasion, Jacqueline Phantom, the cinema owner, agrees. He remains on the roof during the main quest Rescue as the heroes distract the zombies from the noise of the helicopter by playing some loud music from a nearby stage that was set up.
When the helicopter arrives during the opening cutscene of the main quest Evacuation, Hardy backs up the survivors and heroes, wanting to show them that he is in fact on their side. When Serpo tells the immune to climb up first, both they and Hardy see through his lies and deduce that Serpo would fly off as soon as the immune were on board, leaving the others, Hardy included. In an attempt to force Serpo's hand and get him to take them all, Hardy steps forwards and starts to climb the ladder, again trying to get Serpo to back down. Despite a soldier threatening Hardy and saying that if he continues to climb he will shoot him, Hardy climbs up regardless. Eventually, under orders from Serpo, the soldier fatally shoots Hardy, who falls to the ground. Logan Carter gets revenge for Hardy however and shoots down the helicopter with an M72 LAW.

Trivia[]
- After Hardy's death the heroes can be heard talking about him with some remorse, showing that their opinion has indeed changed about him over their time spent with him.
- Samuel Hardy's death is similar to Jin's death from the original Dead Island. Both are shot to death and fall down while trying to get into a helicopter to escape.
