Ryder White's Campaign (also called Dead Island: Ryder White) is a downloadable content pack for Dead Island that was released on January 31, 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC. It is available for 800 Microsoft points on Xbox LIVE Marketplace or for EUR 9,99 on PSN and Steam. Ryder White's Campaign focuses on Ryder White's role as a soldier to contain the infection in Banoi Island and his efforts to find a cure for his wife, Emily.
The DLC comes bundled in with either the Game of the Year edition of Dead Island and is included in the Dead Island Definitive Collection as standard, getting the same treatment as the base game.
Plot[]
During the events prior to the game's main storyline, Ryder was interrogated by one of his superiors, Peterson, to test his loyalty to his country by being presented with targets which he was asked if he would agree to kill without question (one of which was his wife, Emily White, which he agreed to reluctantly). Because he hesitated to kill his wife without question, Ryder was reassigned to Banoi in order to aid with containing the recent Infection outbreak. During the mission, Ryder and his squad on board of a helicopter were ordered to initiate a bombing run on the highway in the jungle. During their flight back to base, the copilot of the aircraft became infected and attacked the other pilot, forcing the craft to crash land in Moresby.
Ryder awakens from the crash several hours later to discover that he is the sole survivor. He is then contacted by the Banoi Island Defense Force and is instructed to regroup with B.I.D.F. Unit 4 stationed near Saint Christopher's Church, as the evacuation zone he requested pick up from has already departed. Ryder later arrives at the unit's location, only to discover that everyone has been killed by the local gang known as the Raskols and stripped of their weapons and equipment which included the explosive charges needed to destroy the City Bridge in Sector 4 (Old Town) in order to prevent the Infection from spreading any further.
He is then instructed by the B.I.D.F. to make his way to the Police Station in Sector 3 of the city in order to recover the explosives to complete Unit 4's mission. After fighting his way to the Police Station, Ryder is confronted by members of the gang who taunt him over the loss of his fellow soldiers. After a heated firefight, Ryder manages to kill the gang members and collects the stolen equipment before being instructed to proceed with finding and destroying the bridge. With most of the roadways blocked, Ryder climbs into a manhole that takes him to the sewers beneath Moresby in order to gain access to the riverside.
Upon exiting the sewers, Ryder's progress is again faltered by a group of Raskols that claim the City Bridge as their territory, leaving him with no other option but to kill more civilians which the B.I.D.F. intel allowed in order to ensure the mission's completion. With the gang members disposed of, Ryder proceeds with planting the charges on the bridge supports and demolishing the bridge. With the mission accomplished, the B.I.D.F. intel orders Ryder to make his way to the evacuation zone in Sector 6 (Moresby Gas Station). Ryder is then forced to confront several waves of zombies as he waits for the evac chopper to arrive.
While on board the chopper, Ryder contacts Emily telling her to prepare herself to be picked up. However, Emily replies, saying that she has been bitten by a patient and told Ryder to go on without her before making her tearful farewell to him. Unable to accept the loss of his wife, Ryder orders the pilot not to land on the aircraft carrier off the coast of the island and instead change course to the Prison in order to pick up his wife, disregarding her advice. The chopper then lands on the roof of the prison where Ryder frantically sprints his way inside to find Emily in hopes of not being too late.
When Ryder reaches Emily in the hospital wing of the prison, he finds her strapped to a bed, in the throes of the transformation into an infected. In broken speech, she tells him to leave her behind. Ryder then travels deeper into the prison in order to find Kevin. Upon finding him, he discovers that Kevin is actually the terrorist, Charon. Ryder is then left with no other choice but to collaborate with Charon in order to ensure his wife's life. Charon instructs Ryder to active the prison's emergency power in order to activate the complex's surveillance cameras which Charon will then use to guide Ryder. Once the power comes back online, Ryder is confronted by a groups of rebel prisoners who managed to obtain some firearms from the prison's armory. After fighting through numerous groups of prisoners, Ryder arrives at one of the other medical wards in the hospital where he finds an antibiotic to slow the effects of the Infection on Emily. Once Ryder obtains the drug, Charon informs him that the Heroes are on their way to the island with the antidote and that the antibiotic would slow down the effects of the Infection on Emily until they arrive.
After injecting Emily, Charon notifies him that a group of prisoners were approaching in retaliation for the ones that Ryder killed in order to obtain the Tetracycline. With the prisoners dead, Ryder travels to the control room in Block C and meets up with Charon. As Ryder approaches Charon, he discovers that Charon was behind the deaths of the scientists at the Laboratory but hides his suspicion. He is then instructed to clear the Infected from the shower room in Block C for when the Heroes arrive. With the shower room cleared, Ryder uses the sewers in order to return to the control. While eavesdropping on Charon's conversation with the Heroes, he discovers that Charon has been posing as him (the Voice). Out of rage, Ryder threatens to kill Charon for endangering Emily and making him betray his country. Charon then ensures him that the Heroes have the "antidote" and that the Heroes won't trust either Ryder or Charon if it is revealed that they were never actually speaking to Ryder. Charon then instructs Ryder to store knockout gas above the elevator lift that the Heroes will be using in order to steal the antidote from them to avoid having to make any negotiations. After placing the gas and returning to the control room, Charon and Ryder watch the Heroes pass out from the gas. Before leaving to retrieve the antidote, Ryder destroys the control room's computer in order to prevent Charon from pulling off more tricks. He then locks Charon in the control room and tells him that he's going to go get the antidote for Emily. Charon then replies to Ryder stating that the antidote is actually a vaccine, and it would only work on people that were in the early stages of Infection — while Emily was already past the first stages. Shaken by his words, Ryder runs off to get back to Emily in the intensive care unit. With Ryder gone, Charon reveals that he had a hidden backup key card and taunts him, stating that Ryder should have killed him when he had the chance.
Afraid of being too late, Ryder collects the antidote from the Heroes and frantically fights his way through countless waves of zombies to get back to Emily. Upon finding Emily, she has already become an Infected. Ryder then vows to make a complete antidote out of the serum and brings Emily to the roof where he discovers that Charon has turned the Heroes against him. Jin then releases Emily to attack Ryder, forcing him to kill her and Jin in retaliation. He then injects himself with the antidote, only to discover that the antidote is actually an enhanced version of the virus that transforms him into a powerful Special Infected. He is then killed by the Heroes. The Heroes get away on Ryder's chopper and it is revealed that Charon plans on using Yerema as Dr. West called, "a walking timebomb" to spread the infection.

Notes[]
- Throughout the campaign, Ryder remains at level 15 without the ability to level any further. In addition to this the skill trees are also unavailable during the campaign, however several abilities are available to him from the beginning. These include the Stomp skill (only to level 1, not using the faster, double foot jump) and Instant Knock-Down ability.
- If one were to edit the save files one would find out that: All of his perks only require 1 skill point to unlock and has different tiers of said perks including lockpick which itself is all 3 tiers seperate. His perks are well rounded ranging from taking less damage, faster gun reload time, instant kill chance with throw, more firearm damage, the perk Rain of Bullets that gives him increased ammo capacity on top of his naturally increased capacity.
- The fixed low level makes the chances of finding non-common weapons extremely rare, although it is possible.
- Further to this, metal chests are entirely absent in the DLC campaign, so there is no way to reliably get a chance to find a higher rarity weapon. The only way to possibly get your hands on a higher rarity weapon is if a zombie drops it. This is more common on Thugs or Floaters, as well as Rams who briefly appear in the Prison towards the end of the DLC.
- In the Definitive Edition version of this DLC, players have speculated that there is a slightly higher rate of green 'uncommon' or above rarity weapons being dropped by zombies than in the original game, though this is as of yet unverified and may simply be a matter of chance.
- Due to Ryder's level 15 level cap, certain weapons are impossible to find due to their higher level spawn requirements. Weapons such as Metal Baseball Bats are therefore impossible to get a hold of by normal means due to them not spawning until after reaching player level 24, something impossible to do in this campaign.
- Most notably, the legendary firearms the Defender of the Motherland and Crowd Pleaser are impossible to find due to having a level 20 and 19 level requirement respectively.
- Throughout the campaign, Ryder consistently gets bombarded with hordes of Infected, making this campaign harder than the main campaign. It is presumed that the huge number of infected is due to the relatively short period of time since the island-wide outbreak started, thus most of the the infected population have not yet become the late-stage Walkers, and are still living, crazed human beings.
- It is a smart idea to close every door behind Ryder when playing through this campaign, as hordes of infected regularly swarm him from rear entrances or areas previously passed.
- There also seems to be an abundance of Suiciders that spawn in many areas of this campaign.
- Ryder's rage mode closely resembles Purna's fury mode, however Ryder draws and fires a pistol while Purna uses a revolver, and time slows down while Ryder is aiming.
- There are few mod plans found across the campaign. The only ones found naturally are the Shocking Crowbar Mod, Sticky Bomb Mod and Stun Gun Mod. If all of the the DLC are installed or if the Game of the Year edition is being played, Ryder will start off with the Ripper Mod, but due to the scarcity of metal scrap needed to make it, it's very unlikely that Ryder will ever be able to use it.
- If playing in the Definitive Edition, Ryder will start off with some more mods available at the beginning of the game. In addition to the Ripper Mod, Ryder will start off with the Bluntly Shocked Mod, Meat Bait Mod and Exploding Meat Mod.
- Only certain mod items will spawn normally in the game, the main ones being bolts, large batteries, phones, wrist watches and weight plates. Bleach is quite common in Moresby, but will completely disappear in the prison. Wire and other limited items will appear occasionally, as will LP4000 batteries in the prison, but the vast majority of mod items will never spawn unless by searching trash cans or other containers. However, due to only getting a handful mods throughout the campaign, Ryder does not need many mod items to craft mods anyway.
- Furthermore, all of the melee weapon mods available to Ryder are of only limited use:
- The Bluntly Shocked mod can only be used on a Heavy Morning Star which cannot be found anywhere in Ryder's campaign and can only be dropped by a zombie, making it highly unlikely Ryder will ever get the chance to use it.
- The Shocking Crowbar mod, which is as the name says only applicable to crowbars, is also of limited use since very few crowbars are found in the DLC, though Ryder will always be able to acquire one at the beginning of the campaign.
- The Ripper mod may never be used by Ryder due to the near total absence of metal scrap from the campaign rendering him unable to make the mod.
- Also several of the mod items that are set to appear frequently are unusually abundant for how limited their uses are:
- Ryder finds a large number of phones all throughout the campaign, yet the only mod available to Ryder that actually uses the phone as a component is the Shocking Crowbar mod which as stated above is of limited availability, making the abundance of phones hollow.
- Ryder finds LP4000 Batteries very frequently despite being an uncommon item in the main campaign, however the only mods that this component are used in are the Stun Gun, which is of little to no use to Ryder given the overwhelming numbers of enemies he consistently faces at once, and the Bluntly Shocked mod which as stated above Ryder will almost never be able to use.
- There is a very large amount of Bleach that can be found throughout the first half of the DLC in Moresby, however the only mod available in the DLC that makes use of it is the Sticky Bomb, which Ryder will not be able to use as frequently as in the main campaign unless he stocks up on them due to the distance between workbenches, making the sheer quantity of Bleach that Ryder finds overkill given its singular purpose. Furthering this, in the base game, Bleach is mostly used for the Striker series of mods to give the firearm a fire effect or is used in the ammo recipes, though none of these applicable mods appear anywhere in the DLC.
- It is possible that while the DLC was in development Ryder was initially intended to be able to craft ammunition, but due to the abundance of ammunition and emphasis on gunplay this may have been deemed unnecessary in the final release.
- Furthermore, all of the melee weapon mods available to Ryder are of only limited use:
Trivia[]
- Completing the campaign in the original Dead Island will unlock the Bluntly Shocked Mod for the main campaign, which is instantly deposited in the player's inventory regardless of where they are in the campaign.
- This is not the case in the Dead Island Definitive Collection where the mod is automatically given at the start of a campaign game regardless of whether the DLC has been completed or not. As such, there is no additional rewards for beating the campaign in the Definitive Edition.
- It is revealed only in Ryder White's Campaign that the events of Dead Island had occurred in late July of 2006. Because of the nature of the timeline, Dead Island: Riptide would have occurred sometime later in the year.
- In very rare cases (through mods/cheats, playing a pre-release, or unpatched console version)[1], it is possible to raise Ryder's level to 16 in Moresby by fighting enough zombies or completing challenges. Doing so unlocks the skill tree to level 16, giving the player 16 points. Upon reaching the prison, Ryder's level is reset to 15 and any level 16 weapons become unusable. It is possible to level up again in the prison, but this will not unlock the skill tree.
- Butchers are the only zombies that don't appear in this campaign but there can be one seen in a cutscene at the end of the campaign.
- Interestingly, if the player were to wait for long enough in Moresby in a single play session, Moresby will actually turn into daytime Moresby, allowing for playing through the first half of the campaign in broad daylight instead of the darkness of night. This will reset upon quitting the save, as it will revert back to its proper night time setting.
- In the Definitive Edition, for some reason whenever Ryder speaks a scripted line it's done through the radio, even if the person he's talking to is right next to him. Spontaneous utterances such as combat barks however do not use the radio.
