Pure Blood is a very hard difficulty main quest given to the Hero by Dr. West in Dead Island.
Synopsis[]
The Hero must obtain the tissue or blood of a native who has not come into contact with the mutated Kuru virus.
Walkthrough[]
- Talk to Dr. West to start the quest.
- He explains that he needs a sample from a native who has not come into contact with the virus at all. As all the nearby natives have eaten the flesh of the infected as part of their beliefs, the only way to get a pure sample is to take one from a native mummy.
- Head to the front of the lab and use the fast travel map to fast travel to Ope's Cave, where you fought the native warrior before.
- If you don't want to fast travel, just take the jeep outside and drive to the cave like you did before.
- Talk to Koritoia Ope and he will agree to come with you to their burial tomb to retrieve a sample, having already been impressed with your fighting skills.
- Follow him out the camp as he travels to Mowen's Boat to take you there. He will set his own pace and it's up to you to keep up with him. However, he will stop to let you catch up if you fall too far behind, though he might be set upon by zombies if you leave him there long enough.
- On the way, you'll be attacked by various Walkers, Infected and a few Thugs, so stay alert and kill them before they can reach him.
- Once you reach the boat, he'll explain where you're going to be before you can use the helm to travel to the Tomb of Natives.
- After a black screen, you'll arrive at the tomb map. Mowen will explain that he'll stay with the boat while you go with the witch doctor.
- Follow Ope, but this time he will assist you in combat when you encounter it.
- You'll first reach a small wooden bridge with two Walkers and a Floater. Kill the Walkers first before dealing with the Floater.
- Continue on, following Ope, who will lead you to the village.
- It's overrun with many zombies, including a gaggle of Walkers, several Infected, a Thug and even a Butcher. Protect Ope at all costs and keep an eye on your health. This is a difficult fight, so make sure you use your best weapon.
- After killing them all, leave the village and follow the path up the mountain. There's some fruit in the village if you need to heal.
- You'll travel to two rope bridges. The path to the first one has some Walkers and a Thug in front of it. Kill them to progress.
- Head onto the bridges and once you're on the second one, you'll get attacked by two toxic Infected and a Butcher. Use a fire weapon to easily kill the Infected in one hit before dealing with the Butcher.
- Continue across after they're head and you'll reach a raised drawbridge, the lever of which is broken on your side. Jump down and hop over the gap to reach the ladder on the other side. There's a Walker on the floor here, so kill it before climbing up.
- There's another Walker pretending to be dead leaning up on the lever. Kick to interrupt its grab and kill it as normal.
- Use the lever to lower the drawbridge. Ope will come across and it's now a straight walk up to the entrance of the tomb.
- A cutscene will play when you enter the tomb. It shows Ope and the heroes entering the tomb. You'll see Yerema on the floor who the heroes are wary of. Ope goes to kill her, but is shot by Purna before he can. They rescue Yerema and while the girls look after her, the boys go to find a mummy. Logan finds one and uses his weapon to cut off some samples. You are then deposited out the other side of the tomb with control back. Yerema is also with you now, and it's another escort part of the quest.
- Basically, this whole quest is just an escort quest! As before, Yerema will lead in her own pace and it's up to you to protect her. Unlike Ope, she will not fight the zombies, and that's a problem. The path down the mountain is winding and involves jumping down some rock faces to reach flatter ground. While doing so, you're constantly harassed by Infected and ever increasing numbers of Walkers.
- DON'T GET BOGGED DOWN FIGHTING THE ZOMBIES! YEREMA WILL BE SWARMED IF YOU'RE TOO SLOW AND THE INFECTED WILL CONSTANTLY SPAWN, SO ONLY KILL THE ONES THAT GET TOO CLOSE AND JUST STICK CLOSE TO YEREMA TO REACH THE BOTTOM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!
- Once you're at the bottom, you'll see a short cutscene that shows Mowen trying to fend off a bunch of zombies with his shotgun. He gets swarmed and grabbed, about to be bitten. It's down to you to help him out.
- Quickly run down to the alter in the middle of the village and help out Mowen. He will help you fight them for the rest of the fight. There's just a bunch of Walkers, so it's not that difficult of a fight.
- After you save him and kill the zombies, Yerema will join you and all together you'll head back to the boat.
- Use the helm of the boat to travel back to the lab.
- After a black transition screen, you'll arrive on the dock with Yerema.
- The final part of this very long escort quest will be taking Yerema to the safety of the lab. However, she will not get into a jeep, no matter how hard you try to get her to enter it, so don't bother. You can take it to help with killing the zombies on the way, as it'll be safer to run them over rather than fighting in melee, but it's more trouble than it's worth.
- She'll go a different way to the way you first entered the lab. At the wrecked truck just outside of the docks, she'll head left to go through the bamboo growths.
- Follow her as she makes her way down. You'll run into yet more Walkers and Thugs, as well as a Butcher on the metal bridge. Once again, you'll need to protect Yerema, so have medkits on hand and your best weapon on your selection wheel.
- Once you reach the metal fencing of the lab, she'll wait behind the fence while you clear the area. There'll be an Infected just in the inside of the door, plus three Walkers lying on the ground. Kill them all before heading back to her. She'll then come through the door and head down the side alleyway, the same you used to get the chemicals from storage.
- Follow her all the way through to the lab reception. She'll head all the way through the lab to arrive just outside of Dr. West's room.
- Head in to see Dr. West and talk to him to finally finish this quest!
Strategies[]
- Ope's village is the hardest part of the mission. One of the best ways to clear the village is to run past Ope (before he reaches the village) and toss a splash damage projectile (Molotov Cocktails or Grenades will come in handy, combine with a Meat Bait for maximum effectiveness) into the pack of undead. Kill the Butcher (using a firearm is recommended at this point) and then deal with the Thug, cleaning up any survivors from your grenade blast afterwards.
Notes[]
- Yerema will leave you behind if you don't keep up with her. And then her icon will disappear from the map, preventing following her. This means you need to bypass even fast zombies like Infected when encountered while following her.
- When you reach Mowen's Boat with Ope you must activate the boat's steering to advance the quest. This makes it an ideal time to stop and clean up any side quests you have left; you won't get a chance to come back to complete them later.
- If you listen to Ope and Yerema as you escort them, you'll hear them give you some lore and backstory about the natives and themselves.
- When you first escort Ope, he'll explain what they believe the infected to be. Resurrected ancestors of their village who are trapped in purgatory, stuck between being completely dead in their version of heaven (which they call the dreamtime) and being stuck on Earth.
- When you escort him the second time at the tomb, he will explain that the village you encounter is actually his village where he grew up, as well as explaining about the tomb.
- Escorting Yerema to the lab, she will explain how she got trapped in the tomb by her father, who is revealed to be Ope.
- During the cutscene inside the tomb, you can see Logan is carrying a homemade machete to cut off the part of the mummy.
- There's a few metal chests in the docks at the lab as well as around the alter at the Tomb of Natives.
- There's nothing of value at the Tomb of Natives, so don't bother checking it for secrets or mods.
Glitches[]
- While escorting Yerema, when you kill a zombie with a fire mod and Yerema touches the burning body, she will stumble but can still stand up.
- Sometimes, the person you are escorting refuses to continue because there are still zombies ahead, even though they have not attacked yet. Advance ahead to trigger the zombie attack, and then your survivor will continue to travel.
- If you advance the quest by talking to Ope at the cave but then exit the game with a different quest enabled and reenter the game without having escorted him to Mowen's Boat first, then it may not let you pursue the quest. To handle this set this quest as active and then exit and reenter the game.
