The Banoi Maximum Security Prison is the final location featured in Dead Island comprising the entirety of Act IV. The Prison is located on a small island off the shores of Banoi Island, and is surrounded by a minefield. It was designed as a maximum security facility for international terrorists. From the recordings found in Ryder White's Campaign, it is revealed that the prison was infected by one of the outside food suppliers to the prison. The person was infected and attacked several guards, who were taken to the Prison Hospital. From here, they infected various other guards and researchers, before it spread to the wider prison populous.

At the end of Act II, the Hero is able to make contact with the "Voice" from the top of the resort Hotel. He informs the Hero he is a Colonel in the Banoi Island Defense Force currently holed up in the prison. In order to reach him, the Hero must travel to the Mingende Jungle and talk to the smuggler, Mowen, to act as a guide through the mine-infested waters.

After reaching Mowen and finding Yerema in the process, the Hero has the option to finish Act III and proceed to the Prison. Prior to travelling to the prison, it is recommended the player makes sure to accomplish everything needed in the Resort, Moresby, and the Jungle. Once the Hero heads to the prison, it is impossible to go back to the other parts of the island until completing the game.

A lot more of the prison is available during the Ryder White's Campaign DLC for Dead Island. While the areas available to Ryder are not the same as the hero, they are just as plentiful and reveal more of the prison, with locations never visited by the hero during their time in the prison. The whole of the second half of the DLC campaign takes place in the prison and during it Ryder fights a lot more human enemies, namely rebels who are escaped prisoners, as well as the usual host of zombies. The latter half of the DLC campaign follows Ryder as he desperately tries to save his wife, in denial about the fact that she's a zombie and adamant that she can still be saved. He assists 'Kevin', who he easily identifies as the infamous hacker/terrorist Charon, and helps him keep the heroes alive to deliver a cure to them, which he believes will save his wife.

Layout[]

The prison is made up of numerous cell blocks spanning the first few floors, with several offices on the upper stories which are used by the senior guards. Most of the inmates are holed up in the canteen, which is just a short distance from the building's kitchen. An armoury is also located on one of the floors, which will need to be broken into during one of the missions for Titus Kabui. The prison is designed to be as self-sufficient as possible, with very limited access to the outside world in the form of boats which travel to the docks to drop off supplies to the prison or via helicopters which can land on the helipad on the roof.

Tactics and Survival[]

Being the final area of the game, you need to have good equipment and supplies to survive here. It's packed full of zombies and special infected in very tight areas, ready to tear you up. It's full of grey and black colours, with no views of the outside world. Everything here wants to kill you, including the survivors.

Make sure you complete any outstanding side quests before heading here, as once you're in the Prison, the only way back is to complete the game and start a new one with the same character. Thankfully, you spend the least amount of time here, since it's all main quest stuff with very few side quests to do, and even then they're very simple and quick to complete.

Your biggest concern is going to be the amount of Rams here, as well as the Infected to a lesser extent. The Rams will often take up entire corridors, meaning you'll have no room to dodge them, especially when completing the main quest The Green Mile in Cell Block A. Rams spawn in the walkways two to three floors up and there's no way past them. You either have to throw something like a molotov at them, or back up to a corner and hope you can dodge into an open cell. There's also a lot of Infected here, so keep your eyes peeled for them, as they'll often come from no-where.

There's also a bunch of human enemies in the shape of prison guards and, during the final mission, BIDF soldiers. They are well armoured, with body armour and sometimes helmets. Many of the guards and all the soldiers carry some sort of rifle, so make sure you take them out quickly, as those rifles can easily take down your health.

Trivia[]

  • The prison uses a lot of the same ambiance music from previous areas of the game. The Resort ambiance music can be heard in the hallway you first arrive in the Prison, for example.
  • Since it is an island prison it is a bit similar to Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco.
  • In the cafeteria next to a prisoner named Harland, there is a prisoner that is simply labelled as "Human".
  • The outside of the prison cannot be seen in detail during the events of Dead Island, except for basic texture/structures meant only to be visible from afar.
    • When playing Ryder White's Campaign, the player is able to briefly go outside and see a portion of the prison, opposite the side facing the resort.
  • The player is able to visit more areas within the prison in Ryder White's Campaign, including extra floors of the hospital, the hospital basement, laundry room, and death row (complete with a working electric chair).

    The Walking Dead toilet

    • In the last death row cell on the left, coming from the electric chair, the player will find a closed toilet. Opening the toilet will reveal bloody water, with a hand reaching out. Below the bowl of the toilet are the words, "Don't Open Dead Inside." This is a direct reference to the comic book series, The Walking Dead, which takes place after a zombie infection. When the protagonist wakes up in the hospital, he sees a set of doors with the same message.
  • The monitors in the hotel's control room show the same images as the prison control room's monitors.

Glitches[]

Dead Island Tiny Ragdoll Man

Tiny dead body glitch

  • Glitches frequently occur with the dead bodies within the Prison. It happens more often in the Prison than in other locations. The bodies either spazz out or are reduced to a tiny size. Techland has yet to address this issue. Example video of said glitch provided.
  • On the wall just outside the canteen, one of Howard Craigson's posters can be found.
  • Occasionally, Infected will spawn in the hallway on the opposite side of the medical office wall, react to the player, and try to run through the wall.
  • An entire wall in missing near the end of the game, in one of the stairs after exiting the shower room. You can see the void through the world and other parts of the map if you jump.
