The mod applied to a fire axe

The mod applied to a fire axe

The Phoenix Mod is a weapon mod featured in Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide. When used at a Workbench, the mod adds medium fire damage and a burning critical to certain Fire Axes.

Overview[]

The Phoenix mod can be seen as essentially an upgraded, though less universal, version of the Torch Mod. The mod is a relatively late addition to the mod selection but does give a usage to Fire Axes and other large axes, giving them a decent burning critical effect as well as fire damage on each hit. The weapon is quite expensive at $1000 and has a high crafting cost in terms of mod parts. However, the cost is worth it for the upgraded damage and fire effects given, making the weapon excellent at decapitating zombies with a good connection to the head. Visually, the mod adds barbed wire wrapped around the handle with purple fire, as well as various wires and a glowing blade.

In Riptide, for whatever reason, the mod is only applicable to the Shillelagh, with all Fire Axes or other axes being no longer applicable to the mod. This only harms the mod, as it further limits its availability to craft. It's also strange considering that the mod description specifically mentions Fire Axes in its text. However, other than this, the mod is unchanged in terms of stats, crafting requirements or cost.

The mod is really let down by its narrow weapon selection. Fire Axes are some of the rarest weapons in the game, only appearing at certain locations, which makes the mod very hard to craft if not in possession of a way of getting Fire Axes easily. This problem is only enhanced in Riptide where only the Shillelagh can be modded with the Phoenix Mod, making it even harder to craft. The mod also has some hard to get hold of mod parts needed, most notably Flares which are quite hard to come by.

Edit This Mod
This may seem ironic but I developed a way to transform a fire axe into a weapon that sets the enemies on fire! Embed it deep into the rotting body of a walking enemy and you'll turn it into a walking column of fire. Made well, this can be a really deadly weapon.
In Dead Island, the mod is found on a table next to the boat you collect from the Smugglers' Marina after killing Afran in the main quest Soldier of Fortune.
In Dead Island: Riptide, the mod is located in an isolated building at the very south end of Henderson, directly west of The Fort of Henderson.

Notes[]

  • Supposedly, if missed in the Jungle, it can later be found in Mowen's secret stash at the Waterfront harbour whilst completing the main quest Boat Supplies.
  • It's unknown why the mod is no longer applicable to fire axes in Dead Island: Riptide and is instead only applicable to the Shillelagh, despite the in game mod's description mentioning the fire axe specifically.
  • In the Definitive Edition, the Phoenix Mod no longer has its unique look, instead just gaining a fire on the blade, which is overall a downgrade to the original.
  • When applied to the weapon, the name becomes 'Phoenix [WEAPON]', e.g. Phoenix Fire Axe or Phoenix Shillelagh.
