“Daily log of Captain Ethan Howard of the Royal Australian Engineers. Constructed by the Japanese during World War Two, the Imperial Army stored ammunition and weapons deep underground, out of the reach of Allied bombers. This cache included chemical weapons, strictly prohibited by the Geneva Convention. As an engineering unit, our job was to safely remove these chemicals. But we have encountered resistance. Creatures that defy description. Cleanup operations have halted as we have now lost half a dozen men in the tunnels. Some believe these creatures may have once been men as some of our own have been infected with a strange disease that is transforming them into something monstrous. We will make one more foray into the tunnels to find those we have lost, but then I am abandoning this operation until we can return with heavy weaponry, reinforcements, and a medical team.”
— in-game description
The Notes of an Australian Military Officer is a quest item featured in Dead Island: Riptide. It is a notebook from an officer of the Australian Defence Force, specifically the Royal Australian Engineers, whilst they were attempting a cleanup operation in the tunnels in the 1970s. The Heroes take this on the request of Dr. Kessler for his side Quest History Lesson, where he asks them to take anything unusual whilst they search the tunnels for a way to Henderson. Whilst traversing the radar dish area of the tunnels, the Heroes encounter this abandoned notebook and decide to take it for Kessler. When they manage to reach the other side of the tunnels, they return to Kessler and hand it over to him, along with the other samples they collected.
