Motel "Safe Haven" is a Dead Zone featured in Dead Island: Riptide. It's one of the many dead zones scattered around the game, nestled in the bottom left corner of Henderson, to the left of the Sea Market. The Heroes come here during the side quest Safe Haven, in pursuit of Maggie's friends. The location was supposedly turned into a safehouse before it was overrun.
Overview[]
Despite being labelled a motel, it is in fact just a laundromat, the same layout as one of the three different types of Dead Zones found in Henderson. The Dead Zone is quite easy to get to, though it's a trek from any Safe House due to being far away. It starts with a long corridor leading to a barricaded set of double doors and an open L-shaped corridor to the right, which leads into the main laundromat. The laundromat area consists of a large rectangular room with several rows of washing machines in the middle of it. The outer walls are lined mostly with racking and lockers to keep clothes, whilst hanging lines adorn the ceiling with washing hung on them to dry. A small room can be accessed which leads to a table and couch with a dead body. The main laundromat area has slight smoke, making it slightly difficult to see.
Strategy[]
The Dead Zone is both straight forwards and also tricky to beat due to the enemies you encounter in it. After entering the main corridor, two Infected will spot you and run down from the end. Stand your ground and kill them, then head to the end of the corridor and kill the Walkers. There'll be a couple of them playing dead, so don't miss them, as well as one in the small L-shaped corridor to the right which leads further into the Dead Zone. There's a Screamer and a bunch of Walkers in the laundromat area itself, so if you have anything like a Sonic Pulse Grenade, that'll be very useful to clear a large chunk of the Walkers instantly. By using the door to your advantage, you can throw something into a room and then close it up, leaving the zombies to be killed or injured. The Screamer is the main threat, so having a high damage or fast attacking weapon like a Staff will be very useful to kill it before it can scream at you. Towards the back, on the left wall, a door will open and some Infected will run out, so don't be caught off-guard. Inside the room is a quest item for Maggie if you're here whilst completing the quest. The main area should now be cleared, but you're not quite done as heading back into the corridor will make one of the doors at the end open and some Infected run into the corridor. Once you've killed them, the area is clear and you can leave.

Other notes | Special enemies consist of at least one Screamer. This location contains the quest item "Letter to Maggie", needed to complete the quest "Safe Haven" given by Maggie. Picking up the letter will open a room near the exit containing a number of Infected and the level 2 chest. The room is inaccessible prior to picking up the letter. |
Notes[]
- The Infected in the side room do not respawn once the quest has been completed, though the room will remain open.
Trivia[]
- The Dead Zone's name is ironic, since a Dead Zone is the opposite of a "safe haven."
- Despite being labelled a 'motel', the building is actually a laundrette, likely a time and cost saving measure by the developers to avoid having to create a whole new area and instead just reuse the same Dead Zone area.
- The ambiance that plays in this area is the same ambiance used for the outside of the Royal Palms Resort from Dead Island.
- One of the side doors down the corridor is not properly placed in the doorway. As such, getting close to it and looking through the crack between the doorframe and door allows you to see in the background void, as well as the walls that make up other areas of the dead zone.
