“A glass bottle filled with fuel with a rag for a wick. When thrown, it will shatter dealing Fire damage, and inflicting Ignited on all zombies in the area.”
— Description
The Molotov Cocktail is a Curveball featured in Dead Island 2. It can be found in the Brentwood Sewer, next to the office in Filtration Access and Servicing.
Overview[]
The Molotov here acts exactly like its original counterpart in the previous games, being a bottle of alcohol with a wick which spreads a pool of flammable liquid on the floor and ignites anything walking into it. It is most effective against larger groups of slow moving enemies, such as a horde of Walkers and Shamblers, or the slower moving apex zombies such as Crushers. Fast moving enemies like Runners and Butchers can often run past the impact point of the molotov and therefore dodge its damage entirely. It is best used in conjunction with a stun curveball like the Flashbang, and it is especially useful with the Meat Bait. Using the Meat Bait you can gather a large group of zombies together and light them all at once with a follow up molotov for maximum impact. It can also be used to light environmental hazards such as pools of oil on the floor, standing heat lamps, or Explosive Barrels.
Unfortunately, there are some limits to its effectiveness, primarily in the fact that some enemies are completely immune to fire and therefore to the effect of the molotov. These include Burning Walkers, Burning Runners, Inferno Crushers, and Firestorm Slobbers. Additionally, enemies that are wet will not take any damage from the fire until they dry out. This means in areas with large pools of water, such as some areas of Venice Beach, Santa Monica, or places like the Lacuna Avenue Sinkhole at the Halperin Hotel, the molotov has limited use. It is also the complete opposite of the Chem Bomb, as while the Chem Bomb can stun the zombies, it also waterlogs them, preventing the molotov from lighting them on fire.
