Marathon is the fourth mission of Escape Dead Island after the previous mission Echoes and before A Fighting Chance.

Synopsis[]

Cliff and his friends have to go deeper into the jungle to get their bearings and think of a plan.

Walkthrough[]

  • After Cliff hallucinates shipping containers falling from the sky and zombies everywhere, he wakes up inside the GeoPharm container on the beach to Linda calling his name.
  • Make your way over to the table in front of you and collect the makeshift club that's there. Break a few things behind you with it to get a feel for how it swings, its speed, etc, then head to the exit of the container.
  • Linda will explain that she fished Cliff out of the sea after he was knocked out by the boat and that he's been out for hours while Linda and Devan have been arguing. However, Cliff still has the rope and screwdriver from before, when he was at the marina, despite Linda claiming he's been in the container all this time.
  • If you return to the beach bar, the zombies will be missing and if you go into the cave you can make it all the way to the garbage chute but you're blocked from going further by lacking a grappling hook.
  • Instead, go to the deserted hut where Devan is waiting. He tells you to break into the hut using your club to break the boards. That's a good idea so go do that. To the left is a way down to a collectible using the rope, so collect that before you enter the hut. You can also talk to Devan to get some dialogue before going in.
  • Collect the medkit on the shelf in front of you, then open the rear door to find a path into the jungle.
  • You're on a pretty linear path, so just keep following it. You'll go down a ladder then up one again. Go right to crouch under a branch and some rocks. Keep going until you reach a ledge looking at a building.
  • Linda asks how they go about getting down, not knowing that Cliff has a rope. Cliff swears something is watching them, or he at least heard something, but the others laugh at this.
  • Use your rope to get down. Linda swears it went down with the boat, but is happy they have one nonetheless. If you go a short distance away, a small scene plays where Cliff stops to let the other two come down and starts to record himself on the island. He does this, unknowingly, in front of one of the mysterious security cameras dotted around the island.
  • Follow Linda and Devan as they walk along the path and make conversation with Cliff. You'll end up at a metal fence and wooden signpost. They talk about the cameras but nothing comes of it. Keep going with them as they push further into the jungle. They'll come to an abrupt stop when you see several giant piles of corpses.
  • Head forwards through the piles until a scene plays. Cliff will bend down and take some pictures of a corpse on the ground. The other two, after looking at the piles, decide to keep heading up the mountain to the top and get the lay of the land.
  • Once back in control of Cliff, you'll see Devan a short distance away and you can talk to him for a few lines of dialogue, but Linda is nowhere to be found.
  • Keep going up the path. Once you enter a cave area, you can hear Linda but she's really gone far ahead. Too far for the length of time it's been, unless she's been sprinting. Keep following the caves and the sound of Linda's voice. You'll come across an area for the grappling hook, but you don't have that yet, so ignore it and move on.
  • You'll arrive near the Mountaintop when you leave the cave, with just a short set of stairs and some more slope to the top. You can finally find Linda at the top, looking at the view. It's a great view, for sure, so spend some time looking at Narapela in its beauty. You've earned it. You can find the two-way radio here too.
  • Look around the area for a bit, then head back the way you came, to follow Linda and Devan.
  • While going through the cave, you can hear them talking about him, but Cliff doesn't say anything, even when he catches up with them at the end of the cave.
  • Upon returned to the piles of bodies, however, some of them come to life as Shamblers. Use your club to kill them, as there's no way of stealth killing these ones. Remember to dodge their attacks and push them away if you're getting swarmed. The club doesn't do a lot of damage and takes quite a few hits to kill them, even with heavy attacks, so dodging is a must here, at least until you get a better weapon. If you're lucky enough, you can execute the zombies you knock down with a heavy attack.
  • Despite this, there's only three of them so kill them and watch a scene play where the three friends freak out over the zombies. However, as they do so, a new type of zombie appears and bites Linda on the neck, the Bouncer. He's even more dangerous at this stage of the game since your club is pretty useless. Dodging is required and heavy attacks will be useful for you. Bouncers run in, swipe at you a couple of times, then run off, giving you little time to react. Dodge him when he runs at you, then hit him before he runs. Do this a couple of times to kill it.
  • It's important to note that if you die to the Bouncer or to any of the Shamblers, YOU NEED TO DO THE WHOLE THING AGAIN FROM THE SHAMBLERS.
  • Once the Bouncer is dead, a cutscene will play where Cliff is patching up Linda with Devan, who tells them they need to get Linda out of there. Upon being asked how she feels, she replies that she's "ready to run a marathon". They then see a plane fly overhead, smoking before it disappears. This marks the end of the mission.

Notes[]

  • This is the first time you meet a Bouncer in the game.

New Game + Differences[]

  • When leaving the mountaintop, you are ambushed by four Shamblers that you need to kill before you can go back down into the cave system to join your friends.
