The Katana is a melee weapon featured in Escape Dead Island. It is available alongside the makeshift club, Trusty Axe or any other melee weapon as Cliff Calo's other primary melee weapon. It allows Cliff to take on zombies in greater numbers and more reliably, capable of doing more damage and allowing Cliff to protect himself better.
Locations[]
Kilo 2 uses a Katana as his melee weapon in the prologue, but this is lost when he is killed at the end of it. His Katana is later acquired by Cliff when he visits the GeoPharm Labs in Mission 7 - Beauty and the Beast, found stuck in a body bag in the Blue Sector halfway through the mission.
During New Game +, a Katana can be found hiding in Cliff's Father's Boat in the cabin, behind a previously locked door along with a medkit during Mission 1 - Smooth Sailing. This allows Cliff to have a good melee weapon for the first half of the game during New Game +.
Another is found inside the building at the Mountaintop, again during New Game +, inside a cabinet that was locked out via a keycard lock. The keycard in question is the Hidden Keycard, which allows access to the cabinet. The only use for this is if you missed the katana earlier in the boat. If you got the boat katana, this one can be unlocked but not collected, as you can't carry a duplicate melee weapon.
Overview[]
The Katana is one of four primary melee weapons Cliff Calo can use. Due to how weapons and combat works in the game, durability is not an issue, so it can be used as much as is desired. The usual statistics for the weapon are not displayed like in Dead Island or Dead Island: Riptide, though it is competing with the Trusty Axe for basic attacks and the Lever Axe for run attacks. Compared to the Lever Axe, the final upgrade, the Katana deals less damage per hit (requiring three hits on a Shambler to kill it rather than two) though it does have a lower stamina cost and high swing speed. Luckily, the Katana can be carried alongside the axe, freely switched out as desired. The katana greatly excels at run attacks but is otherwise a mediocre weapon. There are no mods in the game, and workbenches don't work like in the main games, so the Katana can't be changed or upgraded after being collected.
Damage[]
Damage is based on Cliff's health. Some possible damage numbers may not have been found.
Attack | Median damage | Possible damage numbers |
---|---|---|
Basic 1 | 5.9 | 4.4, 5.4, 6.4 and 7.4 |
Basic 2 | 5.9 | 4.4, 5.4, 6.4 and 7.4 |
Basic 3 | 11.3 | 8.8, 10.8, 11.8, 12.8 and 13.8 |
Heavy | 14.2 | 13.2, 14.2 and 15.2 |
Run | 24.3 | 21.8, 23.8, 25.8 and 26.8 |
Ground | 5.4 | 4.4, 5.4 and 6.4 |
Basic 1 to 3 are the separate attacks of a full combo attack. The Katana can unleash 0,46 combos per second meaning a DPS of 10.63. The combo speed drops by ~32% when out of stamina which happens after 10 combos. For heavy attacks an attack speed of 0,59 heavies per second can be achieved with corresponding DPS of 8.38. This drops by ~23.5% when out of stamina, which is after 5 heavy attacks.
Notes[]
- As with all weapons in Escape Dead Island, the club can't break.
- It also can't be upgraded at a workbench, like other Escape weapons.
- After collecting the katana, it DOES NOT replace the other melee weapon Cliff has at the time, meaning they can be swapped between and are not mutually exclusive.
