The Hatchet is a variant of the Axe featured in Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide. It can be given as a Quest reward, sold by various Merchants or found on killed Zombies or in Metal chests.

- Several can be given out as quest rewards:
- Loren at the River Village will give a Hatchet for completing her side quest Blood in the Tropics.
- Cecil will give one out for completing his side quest The Darkness in Riptide.
- Marvin will give one for completing the main quest City Newcomer in Riptide.
- Several Merchants can sell Hatchets:
- Keenan Fisher at the River Village will sell one after getting his stock back at the end of the main quest Chasing Shadows.
- Dwight Turner at the Overpass Camp can sell one after completing his side quest Visit to the Pub.
- In Riptide, Alex in Henderson can sell one after completing his rescue quest Rescue Alex.
