Gascan

A gas can

Gas Cans, or Fuel Canisters as they are known in Dead Island: Riptide, are interactive items found in Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide, located around the Gas Stations. Carrying one will reduce the Hero to a walk, unable to sprint. You are also unable to hold a weapon or throw one, so if you get caught out, you will have to waste time throwing the can away and pulling out a weapon. However, throwing one at a zombie will cause a small amount of damage and knock them down, giving you a small grace period.

As they are used in some quests they cannot be ignited like the Propane Tank, only tossed away to be picked up later. Gas Cans can be placed in the back of Vehicles.

Appearance[]

Gas cans appear as standard metal jerry cans. They are blue, made from a metal such as steel with some rust around the handle area, likely from both their age and the amount of use. The cap is mounted on the side for easy pouring.

Usage[]

During Act I, both Mike from the Lifeguard Tower and Harlan Johnson will ask you to obtain gas for them at some point. You can easily complete both quest at the same time. Accept the quest Ashes to Ashes from Mike and when you take the gas from the Lighthouse Gas Station, take two extra cans. As you travel to the City Tunnel Gas Station, stop off to complete Harlan's quest to get into the bungalow. Once he's in there, accept his next quest Fluid Necessity to bring him two gas cans. Now just head back to your car and take out the two spare cans.

Alternatively, you can complete it at the same time as getting Seek'n'Loot from Sinamoi. Collect the one Juice Pack from the Lighthouse Gas Station but also take two gas cans. As you travel to the City Tunnel Gas Station, stop off to complete Harlan's quests and give him the gas cans.

In Riptide, the gas can is required for Pierre's side quest Fire Sale, in which you need to bring a can back to his shop, Pierre's Magasin, so he can start his generator. After searching for one at the nearby Oil Storage but failing to fill it up due to the pumps being switched off, you need to travel to Marik's Marina and fill it up using the pump there, before bringing it back to Pierre.

Four cans are also used for the main quest Quarantine Zone, in which a total of 4 cans must be found, attached to a bulldozer and used to blow up the entrance to the Quarantine Zone. These cans are found in open, abandoned shops nearby, and attached to the bulldozer, two on each side. The dozer is started, ploughs through the entrance to the zone and leaves a trail of gas on the ground, which the heroes light using a Lighter, causing the bulldozer to blow up along with all the zombies near to it.

Notes[]

  • You can find inert gas cans at some other locations as static world pieces. Mostly in Moresby, but you can also find them in some locations in the Jungle.
  • Shooting them does not cause them to explode, nor does damage in any way.
  • For some reason, the Fuel Canisters in Riptide have the model of the Chemicals from the Laboratory in Dead Island.
    • Even stranger, after picking it up and putting it down, it will instead switch to a model of a plain white can instead of the chemicals.
  • The gas can that Pierre has is orange, and is the only time we can find an orange fuel canister.
