Rain in Flooded Jungle

The flooded jungle

The Flooded Jungle is a location in Dead Island: Riptide. This is the first location where the players start out after being washed up on the beach.

Overview[]

The Flooded Jungle is the primary location of Palanai Island for the majority of Act I in Dead Island: Riptide. The Hero wakes up on Pearl Sands beach the morning after The Storm and must find a way to safety. The majority of the flooded jungle is swamp-like and has been flooded from the recent monsoons. Flooding is a common occurrence, as the majority of the inhabitants have stilt houses and boats to traverse the jungle.

The southeast corner of the jungle contains the Paradise Survival Camp and leads down to the Pearl Sands beach. In the southwest corner is Halai Village, the major habitation of the jungle. The flooded jungle also contains various smaller stilt villages, several caves and caverns, tree-top observation posts, a coastal RV park, a gas station, small docks, and an old laboratory. The actual flooded jungle location also includes the Pinai Ferry Station, although access to it is blocked by the bridge being washed out. Much like Banoi, Palanai was a former Japanese outpost during World War II. Unlike Banoi, however, Panai was further from the front lines and acted as storage and contained a communications array buried below the surface.

Tactics and Survival[]

The flooded jungle is a very difficult starter area as far as it goes. In comparison to the Resort area from Dead Island, this is far harder and not as pleasant to look at in comparison. The Resort has beautiful sunshine, bright beaches and an overall tropical resort look and feel. The flooded jungle is just that, a hot, sweaty jungle which isn't too fun to traverse.

Because of the high amounts of zombies and special infected, namely Floaters and normal Infected, the jungle is very unforgiving to new players. The original game had a decent difficulty curve, as you only had Walkers, Infected and Thugs to worry about when you had starter weapons. More zombie types were introduced in good ways at well timed intervals. In Riptide, everything is thrown at you at once when you have no skills, health or good weapons, making the difficulty curve a lot sharper than the original game.

As such, proceed with caution. Slowly and methodically travel about the place with your head on a swivel. Use a car as much as possible on the roads, as it offers protection from the zombies, as well as an easy way to kill them off without loosing health or weapon durability. Use fast travel as a means of getting around safe houses and shortening your travel length to objectives. Save up your money and get good weapons quickly, as there's a lot of dangerous special infected around which will easily tear you up if you're low level just starting off.

Later on, you'll unlock the motorboat. DO NOT USE IT UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY! Due to the high amount of Drowers in the waterways, travelling by boat is far more hazardous and can even be longer than just wading through on foot. There's two times you should use the boat at maximum, which is during the quests Pump Action and Heavy Equipment as you can't really transport the items by hand. That is the only time you should use it, as it's a menace to your health!
