The quest variety
Flares are uncommon miscellaneous items featured in Dead Island. They are used for creating a specific weapon modification and can be randomly found throughout the Banoi Island. These are not to be confused with the flares requested by Trevor Cohen on top of the Lighthouse for the quest Light My Fire. They appear as long stick flares which have the red flare compound on two-thirds of the body and a yellow area to hold the flare on the remaining third. The body has various warnings written on it.
In Dead Island: Riptide, they are now usable items which can be thrown to light up dark areas as an alternate to the flashlight.
Locations[]
- Found randomly in lootable containers (closets, luggage, etc.).
- Found randomly on corpses and fallen zombies.
- Some merchants rarely sell them.

As equipment[]
Flares reappear in Dead Island: Riptide as usable items. They are equipped on the weapon wheels like a regular throwable. When selected, the Hero will hold the flare in their hand in front of them, like a grenade or molotov. Upon being thrown, the hero will break off the top of the flare to light it, then throw it in front of them, again similar to a grenade or other throwable. The flare will bounce off walls or floors before landing on a flat surface, and will remain lit for around 30 seconds or so. There is no way of holding it while it is lit and they can stack up to 30 in a stack, like contemporary throwable weapons.
