The Dweller is a special infected encountered in Escape Dead Island Underwater Labs DLC. It is first met a short way into the GeoPharm Complex that makes up the DLC's location. Many more of them are then found across the complex, a dangerous hazard.

Overview[]

Dwellers are a strange zombie but one of the deadliest. Out of all the variants, mutations and specialisations across the Banoi Archipelago, the Dweller is for certain the most dangerous. Dwellers are unique in that they have an interesting method of detecting prey. Their eyesight is terrible, which results in their hearing being superb. Complimenting this, they are tougher than Butchers and just as fast as them and Infected while doing more damage than a Butcher. Their one downside is that they have no ranged attack, which prevents them being a true apex predator.

Appearance[]

Dwellers are much like Butchers in that they're quite mutated from the infection, with scraps of clothes left on their body and patches of skin missing, revealing muscle beneath them. All their hair has fallen out and their arms and face are covered in blood. They have the remains of a white shirt on, along with tattered orange shorts, though they do have some good condition boots on. Their hands have turned into sharp claws while their spine has been exposed on their back, visible from the ripped shirt, exposing both their spine and back muscles.

Behaviour[]

Dwellers will often be heard earlier than seen. They will often sniff and make noise to try and detect a survivor, whether this is them actually trying to smell a living being or some form of echolocation is not pinpointed. They have extremely poor eyesight, likely from living in near darkness, meaning if a survivor was detected, they simply have to freeze like a statue and there's a good chance that the Dweller will not realise they are there. However, to counter this, Dwellers have developed extremely sensitive hearing and possibly a good sense of smell, making them very hard to sneak up on. They can hear even the smallest of noise from a long distance and will quickly come to investigate it. They're fast and run hunched over, when a survivor is detected there's very little chance of escape once the Dweller is after them. They are also extremely tough, capable of shrugging off even axe hits or the sharp blade of a katana. Even firearms do little against them, requiring many rounds to go down.

Strategy[]

  • Engaging a Dweller in melee combat is suicide. Avoid it at all costs. They take very little damage and deal a lot in return. A Dweller can easily kill Cliff in 3 swipes.
  • Firearms do little against them as well, though unloading an entire magazine of the assault rifle into one does do something at least.
  • Misdirection and kiting them is the best way to deal with them, rather than killing them. Setting off an explosive barrel, using an environmental object that creates noise or even shooting a wall with a quiet weapon like the silenced pistol to get them to go to a certain area is very useful for avoiding them.
  • They will still die to a stealth kill, but sneaking up on them is extremely difficult, even if approaching from directly behind. The best approach to achieve a stealth kill is to sneak up on them from behind and dash forward while spamming the knife button.
  • Using an environmental object to kill them such as several explosive barrels or electrified water is a good way to kill them, but luring them to one of these things is hard to do in the first place and due to their health/toughness, it can take a while for them to die from it.

Damage and Health[]

  • Dweller have 170 HP.
  • Their attacks deal the following damage:
    • Hit = 8
    • Bite = 6

Trivia[]

  • Dwellers are the hardest regular zombie in the game. Their health is even higher than that of the Linda and Cliff bosses and only slightly lower than that of shadow Aaron.
  • Dwellers are the only Zombie capable of surviving an explosive barrel, where one is present. This is ironic as it is required to kill a Dweller with an explosive barrel or other environmental hazard for the achievement/trophy It's Super Effective!
    • Dwellers must be damaged below 57% health for them to die from an explosive barrel.
  • They do not feature outside of the DLC, a good thing considering how tough they are to deal with.
  • Dweller also could have be featured in the cancelled Dead Island 2 (2014) as seen in E3 Trailer, though this was unconfirmed.
  • The Dwellers are similar to the Butchers that appeared in the first two Dead Island games.
