Cut Quest is an unnamed side quest that was cut, along with its quest giver, from the final version of Dead Island. Had this quest got into the final game, Abel would have given it to the Hero and propositioned them to help him make his special 'moonshine'. It involves some new items that would have needed their own models, or at least tweaked versions of models already in the game.
Abel would have been drunk all throughout the quest, as his dialogue includes the line "Name's Abel. And I'm a little wasted." From this we can assume that he'd sound and act somewhat like Stanley Garrison in the Resort, with slurred speech and wobbling around, if he was standing.
Synopsis[]
Help Abel make his 'moonshine'.
Walkthrough[]
- This is all speculation, but from the dialogue found in the game files, we can piece together a rough idea of how the quest would have played out.
- You'd start it by talking to Abel to start the quest.
- Abel would have introduced himself and explained that he's drunk. However, he would tell the hero that they don't want to face zombies sober. As such, if they helped him he could make them some special 'moonshine' that would make them drunk very quickly.
- He would then explain that he would need some special ingredients to make it, namely "Rice or taters and sugar".
- The hero would then have to go and find said ingredients for him. They would likely either be naturally spawning things like canned food, or the hero would have to go to a specific place and find some.
- After recovering said ingredients, they would return to Abel.
- Here's where the quest structure breaks down, as the quest could either be a straight forwards side quest, or a continuous quest, as a line of dialogue sounds like something you'd hear from an NPC who's given out a continuous quest. Namely this line: "Keep looking. I don't be all high and dry" which sounds a lot like Ned's line from the Lighthouse when you give him canned food for his continuous quest Wind in the Stomach.
- Whatever quest it is, once you have the ingredients, you'd return to Abel to hand them over and collect your reward or rewards, dependant on whether it's a side quest or continuous quest. See below for possible rewards.
Possible rewards[]
As we don't know if it was going to be a full-blown side quest or just a continuous one, we can't be sure on the rewards. There's several possibilities on what could be given out as a reward.
- Possibility 1: A new blueprint that allows you to craft Abel's 'moonshine'. This moonshine would likely work in the same way as alcohol, but likely with better buffs and less drawbacks, but requiring the materials and ingredients to craft.
- Possibility 2: Abel gives you a couple of bottles of 'moonshine' but not the blueprint to make it, like how some quests give you a throwable to use after completing the quest.
- Possibility 3: It's a continuous quest, he might give out one or several of his 'moonshine' bottles every time you hand in the quest, the same as how Mike or Harlan give out Molotov Cocktails for completing their quests.
- Possibility 4: This is the worst possibility, but there's dialogue that might back it up. If the quest was a continuous one, upon completion each time Abel would give out some ammunition, the same as Ethan when you complete his continuous quest Light is Life. The dialogue that might back this up is this: "I'll trade you food, ammo, whatever the fuck you want. What do you say?" However, this might just be the same as other quest givers and doesn't hint at what reward you'd be given.
Notes[]
- We can't be sure exactly where Abel and his quest would be located, but we can assume no earlier than Moresby, as Abel mentions ammo, which is hardly ever mentioned before you reach Moresby.
- We also don't know whether he'd be located in an existing safehouse or not. However, it seems likely that he'd be located in his own separate house or area, given that he would need equipment to make the 'moonshine'.
- The ingredients needed for the quest are not found in the game files, so it's not known if these would exist as a single package that you collect or as individuals like canned food.
Dialogue found[]
As I say, dialogue for Abel and his related quest has been found in the game files. This is all we know that relates to the quest:
- Where are you mothers going, man? Come here!
- Name's Abel. And I'm a little wasted.
- Been imbibing my own product.
- You like moonshine? You don't wanna face these fuckers sober. Shit.
- I'm running a little bit low. It's my granddaddy's recipe. From Boone County, Kentucky, friends. Anyway, this stuff'll make you stand up and say howdy.
- If you can wrangle me up some sugar and rice or potatoes or anything starchy, I'll be glad to make some more. Shit could be anywhere.
- I'll trade you food, ammo, whatever the fuck you want. What do you say?
- You bring me what I need and I'll make you some killer moonshine.
- So you decided to help out old Abel after all? Rice or taters or whatever you can find, man. And I'll give you whatever. Within reason.
- Alright then. You just gotta find me rice or tater and sugar.
- Fine then. Fuck you very much.
- I got a shitload of demand and very little supply right now man. What's going on?
- Keep looking. I don't be all high and dry.
- Fuck yeah...Thanks man. I gotta lot people buying this shit up. So you can bring me whatever you can find and I will make it worth your while.
