Cut is an effect that happens when zombies are attacked with sharp weapons (or, in some instances, firearms such as the heavy pistol or the shotgun). This is the sharp weapon counterpart of the "break", and when it takes place, the targeted limb will be detached.

Unlike with the break effect, it can occur on both humans and zombies and happen on every available limb. Some enemies, such as Thugs, have a higher damage resistance total than a basic Walker, so while severing a Walker limb can happen in just a couple of hits, cutting off a Thug limb can take upwards of five or more hits to completely cut through. Since the whole limb comes off, rather than just the internal bone breaking, a cut can only happen with sharp weapons and occasionally firearms such as a shotgun. However, blunt weapons equipped with certain mods, such as a Ripper baseball bat, can still sever limbs due to the sharp nature of the mod, despite being a blunt weapon as a base. Humans hit with a sharp weapon will generally have their limb severed in a single hit, especially when going for the head, so going for decapitations on punks and the like are a good idea, that is if you can hit them in the first place, as melee punks are very good at dodging melee attacks. Like with the break effect, it is impossible to sever a limb using environmental effects or by running them over in a vehicle. However, a zombie that is thrown with an impact effect modded weapon will likely loose one or more limbs in the resulting impact with the wall, sending the limb off elsewhere as it is cut off from the body.

Effects[]

Head/Neck: The target dies instantly due to the lack of a head. Sometimes a zombie can still walk a little after beheading, flailing its arms in front of it as it goes, but will collapse after around five seconds. A human enemy that is beheaded will instantly die and collapse to the ground.

Arms: The zombie will have to attack with its opposite arm. When both arms are cut off while it is knocked down it will die instantly because of the inability to get up again. Much like the break. If both arms are severed but the zombies is still up, it will instead attempt to bite rather than claw. If the zombie is subsequently knocked down, it will immediately die.

Legs: A zombie will instantly die when one of its legs has been severed, regardless of its level compared to the player or how much health it has left. Due to Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide not implementing crawlers or a similar mechanic, cutting off a leg will instantly kill the zombie, as it can't hop around and turning into a crawler doesn't exist for the game.
