Chasing Shadows is a hard difficulty main quest given to the Hero by Matutero in Dead Island. It's the first true main quest that takes place in the Jungle and introduces you to the main enemy of the Jungle: the humans.

Synopsis[]

The Hero must retrieve two weapon crates in order to gain Matutero's trust.

Walkthrough[]

  • Talk to Matutero to start the quest.
  • He won't tell you where Mowen is until you help the village. Afran attacked them, killed a lot of the villagers and stole their weapons. However, their convoy got attacked by zombies and are trapped in the Jungle. If you help him get the weapons back, he'll tell you how to get to Mowen.
  • You might be temped to use the Jeep in the River Village to get to the convoy, however the main gate is closed, forcing you to head through the canyon to the Ghost Village.
  • Head up the slope to the top of the village and travel to the cliff face in front of you. There's a crack where the canyon is leading to the Ghost Village.
  • There are several Walkers at various points up to the village, so kill them all and reach the village.
  • Head up the fallen tree trunk to reach the roof of the building in front of you and head to the left.
  • You've now got a good view of the three Walkers in the clearing in the middle of the village. A Floater will also emerge from the nearby pool of water.
  • There's a propane tank up here to help you dispatch them, especially the Floater. Now is also a good time to use something like a grenade, as a molotov will not harm the Floater.
  • However you do it, kill them all and jump down. Take out your highest damage weapon and head to the back of the village.
  • You'll see a cutscene which introduces you to the final special infected: a Butcher. It's basically an Infected on steroids.
  • Make sure you have some medkits, just in case, and kill the Butcher. See its dedicated page with tips on killing it easily.
  • Travel down the hall and through the small lake to reach a washed out road. You'll probably encounter another Floater in the lake.
  • Travel over the metal road bridge and take some stairs to a wooden footbridge.
  • Walk over it and take a right, down another dirt road. This will lead you to the vehicle convoy.
  • You can catch one of Afran's Soldiers off-guard while he smokes a cigarette. Kill him and take his pistol if you don't already have one. You'll need it.
  • Take out the pistol and start shooting your way through the convoy guards.
  • The weapon crates are small cube wooden crates which you can pick up. Only pick them up if it's safe to do so, as you can't run, kick or swing a weapon while carrying it.
  • After you reach the second crate, Infected will start to attack the convoy, attracted by the gunfire. Believe it or not, this is actually a useful thing to happen, as the Infected will also attack the remaining soldiers, taking their attention off you.
  • Kill any Infected who attack you, but use the intervention to pick up the weapon crates and load them onto one of the remaining working Jeeps at the front of the convoy.
  • Load the crates into the rear of the Jeep, get in and drive off, leaving the soldiers to their fate.
  • Follow the road and map markers to reach the River Village. The wooden gate is now open and you can use the vehicle from here on out to get around the Jungle.
  • Park up in front of the hut that Matutero is in and deliver the two weapon crates outside in the glowing blue outline.
  • Head inside and talk to Matutero to finish the quest and receive your reward.

Notes[]

  • The reason the wooden gate is closed to stop you using the Jeep in the village is to force you to head to the Ghost Village and see the cutscene introducing the Butcher.
  • There are several metal chests in Afran's vehicle convoy. Make sure to loot them while you're there if you can.
  • The Infected attack is actually a good thing, as it will stop the soldiers from shooting at you, allowing you to move the crates to the Jeep without the hassle of being shot at. Infected are easier to kill than humans.
  • The weapon crates will appear on the map and minimap as red hand pick up icons, so you don't loose track of them.
  • You can easily encounter a quick proximity quest when you are taking back the weapons to Matutero. You need to help the mugged survivor defend against a couple of jungle muggers.

Glitches[]

  • It is easy to get the Jeep stuck between rocks so that it can't be dislodged. In multi-player the 2 crates can be carried but in single player this requires 2 trips, so be careful.
  • After placing the weapons crates in your vehicle, the weapons crates continue to show up on your mini map as red lootable items. Don't be confused; there are only two crates that you need, and once they are in your vehicle, you can return to Matutero.
