Caustic-X is a dangerous material featured in Dead Island 2. It is a green caustic alkaline substance that can be found all across Los Angeles.
Overview[]
Caustic-X is an industrial alkali solvent solution manufactured by Dolus Industrial Inc. of Vista, California. It is designated as a Class 8 corrosive hazard which can cause severe burns, injury and/or death. As such, the manufacturer recommends that PPE is worn while handling the substance, and care must be taken to avoid contact with the skin and eyes, as well as inhalation or ingestion. If Caustic-X does make contact with the skin or eyes, one must immediately rinse the affected area with water for fifteen minutes.
During the outbreak, the United States Army and the Center for Disease Control used Caustic-X to dispose of infected bodies and the bodies of people infected yet not turned. The Los Angeles Fire Department was contracted by the Army to ferry shipments of Caustic-X to disposal sites. Notably, the Halperin Hotel Pool was drained of water and filled with Caustic-X to dispose of the infected bodies, draining the dissolved remains into the sewers. The Sodulux Estates in Beverly Hills was also turned into a body disposal center with pools filled with Caustic-X. Furthermore, some CDC personnel were supplied with portable tanks of Caustic-X hooked up to sprayers for additional body disposal. However, the Caustic-X failed to fully destroy the Autophage in the infected bodies and the disease adapted by congolmerating the dissolved bodies into a sort of biomass, the highest concentration of which was present in the Main Septic Tank of the Brentwood Sewer.
Rav, a VCLA student, has been conducting his own research into the effects of Caustic-X and invented an improvised bomb which releases the substance.
Caustic-X inflicts caustic damage to the player and zombies that step into it. Hazmat Walkers, Hazmat Runners, Caustic-X Walkers, Firefighter Walkers, Firefighter Runners and Slobbers are all immune to its effects. Riot Gear Walkers are also immune to Caustic-X until their armor is knocked off.
Caustic-X puddles can be cleaned by any source of water, such as a Water Jerrycan or Hydration Walker.
Sources of Caustic-X[]
Caustic-X can be found in several forms, including:
- Intermediate Bulk Containers (non-interactable)
- Green 55 gallon barrels (can be destroyed to release a puddle of Caustic-X)
- Caustic Jerrycans
- Caustic-X Walkers
- Caustic-X Bombs
- Environmental puddles/pools
Trivia[]
- In The Art of Dead Island 2, it's revealed that the team wanted the substance to resemble something from the 1985 comedy horror movie Re-Animator.
- The book also incorrectly calls the substance an acid, whilst in-game notes and collectibles all label it as an alkaline instead.
