Cash is a currency form available in Dead Island, Dead Island: Riptide and Dead Island 2. It is needed to buy new weapons and different components, as well as to upgrade, repair, and modify their current weapons. In Dead Island 2, it is also used to level up weapons to the play level at a workbench. It can't be dropped or traded, but you can carry as much cash as you want. You can quickly see how much cash you have by opening up the weapon wheel and looking up the top corner, where it will display your total amount of cash.

In Dead Island and Riptide, when you die, you loose a percentage of your current cash total, somewhere around 15-20% of all your cash. For characters that struggle to easily get a lot of cash or who don't have a lot of health, this is an extra incentive to not die. Some characters have skills that allow them to either gain more cash from looting, or loose less when they die. Sam B has a skill to get up to 30% more cash when looting while Xian Mei has a skill that lets her loose up to 45% less cash when she dies, for example, which can negate the problems of cash. This is not the case in Dead Island 2, where you do not lose cash for dying.

Acquiring[]

Cash is obtained by the Heroes in a number of ways:

  • Common zombies such as Walkers drop from 10–1000 dollars.
  • Special Zombies and Apex Variants like Thugs and Rams drop 100–3000 dollars.
  • Human enemies can also drop cash in the same amounts as regular zombies.
  • Cash registers may hold 5–5000 dollars.
  • Wallets (also found in luggage) may hold 8–300 dollars.
  • Completing certain quests will bring the Heroes a substantial amount of money.
  • Continuous quests often give cash as a reward. Though the amount is lower than looting, they can be completed an infinite amount of times.
  • Safes often contain large sums of cash 1000-8000 dollars.
  • Wicker baskets will often give out small amounts of cash, around 10-1000 dollars the same as regular zombies and are found in the jungle and laboratory.

Usage[]

Cash is used in a number of ways. The most important one is for weapon repairing, upgrading and modding at workbenches scattered across the game. Depending on the weapon level, rarity and any mods applied to it, the cost of upgrading and repairing a weapon can range from just a few hundred dollars to $80,000 or more. As such, retaining, saving and collecting as much cash is needed for some weapons, usually firearms, to get them to their full potential. Weapon mods generally don't go higher than a few thousand dollars to create, though they do require the correct amount of mod parts to make them as well as the cash funds to do it. Because a weapon will always degrade on use, having cash on hand to repair it means you'll always need to get more cash.

The other use of cash is to purchase weapons and mod items from merchants which are located around the games, generally at safe houses. Merchants sell all sorts of useful items, from weapons to mod items to even weapon mods themselves in the case of Riptide. Once again, depending on the rarity of the weapon, these can range from a few hundred dollars to $120,000 for a high level legendary rifle. If you want a good legendary weapon from a merchant, you've got to make sure you've got enough cash saved or you can sell enough items to the merchant to be able to afford to purchase the weapon. Because of the high price of some of these good weapons, being able to keep your cash saved up in large quantities is essential.

Notes[]

  • There's three different safes in the Laboratory which can easily be farmed to get a lot of cash very quickly. One is next to the workbench while the other two
  • The Supermarket can easily be farmed for cash. See how to here.

Trivia[]

  • While all in-game items are ridiculously expensive (many even reach the 4th or 5th digits as the player approaches the higher levels), their real-life counterparts are significantly cheaper. The high prices are usually for balancing reasons and because of the fact that many items are rather hard to come by and need to be scavenged in a zombie apocalypse.
  • While cash is very valuable in the game, cash would be worthless in a real zombie apocalypse.
