Born to Be Wild is a very hard difficulty main quest given to the Hero by John Sinamoi in Dead Island.

Synopsis[]

The Hero is asked by Sinamoi to recover a powerful truck from the Hotel's parking garage.

Walkthrough[]

  • Talk to Sinamoi to start the quest.
  • He's afraid that the survivors will have to scavenge Moresby for supplies, but to do that they'll need a better vehicle. Sinamoi remembers seeing an armoured vehicle pull a broken 18 wheeler truck out of a ditch and it would be perfect for scavenging in the dangerous streets of the city. He remembers seeing it in the parking lot of the hotel, but getting there is tricky. He asks the heroes to go and find the truck to bring it back.
  • There are multiple ways to get to the hotel:
    • Head downstairs and get into the car located in the Lifeguard Tower's garage. If you've not yet completed the side quest Lazarus Rising, either complete it to get access to the car or fast travel to the Lighthouse and use their car.
    • Alternatively, you can exit the Lifeguard Tower and head into the Hotel Bungalows area, heading towards the closet point of the hotel. There's a walkway around it which leads to the front pools and fountains outside the hotel. From here, you can follow the quest navigation to the next point.
  • If travelling by foot, you'll encounter the Walkers and Infected at the pools and around the sides, whilst going by vehicle has Walkers and a couple of Infected in the hotel grounds to deal with. Either way, you need to head towards the hotel entrance near the underground parking lot. It's down a set of stairs to a lower walkway area.
  • Two Thugs are in in front of the doors in and both need to be killed, as one of them has the keycard to enter the hotel. Splitting them up is a good idea as then one can be targeted at time. There are several Walkers on the ground near to them, so killing them first will help make the fight easier.
  • Loot the Thugs to find the keycard, then enter the hotel. If you have a Molotov Cocktail or similar throwable, it's possible to kill both Thugs quite easily.
  • Once inside the reception area, head through the corridors and kill the Walkers. You'll hear a man talking to you via the camera system who introduces himself as Mike Davis. He's a security guard, hence why he has access to the cameras. He warns you of a load of Walkers in a room close to you, which you'll have to pass through.
  • It's a bar/restaurant area and there are indeed a few Walkers, but they're easy enough to deal with. Once they're all dead, head through the door to reach an elevator shaft.
  • Mike is on the other side and he agrees to help you reach the parking garage on one condition: you find his security partner, Ken, who he lost contact with. If you help him with that, he'll let you know how to reach the garage.
  • Jump down the elevator shaft to the elevator just below and go through the top hatch of the elevator to reach the floor below.
  • This is a long corridor to the kitchens. Head through the door and kill the Walkers in front of them. Head through the first kitchen to reach another set of double doors, separating the two kitchens.
  • You can either head straight through or find a way around to get in from a different direction. Heading through the door is the most direct route but there's a host of Walkers and a Thug here, so flanking them can break them up and make them more manageable. Having a throwable such as a Molotov or Deo-Bomb can help deal with the group, or at least cause a lot of damage to them.
  • Continue through the kitchen to a side door. Head through it to enter a few small side rooms as well as a steamed up corridor.
  • Head down the corridor, through a door at the end and into another steam corridor.
  • Stay by the door as there's three Infected at the end of the corridor who will scream and run at you out of the fog. Don't get caught out by this and kill them when they reach you. Once they're dead, head down the corridor and through the door at the end, into a storage room of some sort.
  • Through the closed doors is the indoor pool, but there's a lot of Walkers and Infected here. Using a Meat Bait or two will be very useful here to distract them, or at least get them into one location where an Exploding Meat or throwable like a Molotov or Deo-Bomb can kill most of them.
  • If no throwables are available, keeping out of range of the Walkers until the Infected are dealt with will make it a lot easier. Once the Infected are dead, the Walkers can be tackled. Alternatively, staying by the door, hitting a few of them and then closing the door can help keep them more manageable, but it's slow and inconsistent.
  • Once all Zombies are dead, cross the pool area to a double wooden door at the end, which leads to the showers and changing room.
  • There's a few Walkers in here, but they're easily dealt with. Navigate the showers and exit them into a hallway, which has some stairs up.
  • The area has a lot of Walkers on both levels, so killing them in small groups makes them easier to manage. Once all Walkers on the ground floor are dealt with, heading up the stairs and dealing with the groups upstairs can be done.
  • Head away from the stairs towards some glass double doors at the end. Some Walkers lurk around the columns in between, so check them carefully whilst crossing.
  • Head through the double doors and into the small office to the right, just in front of the single door that heads further into the hotel.
  • Ken is lying on the floor in pain, clearly injured. He doesn't say what happened to him, but he was likely bitten and is delirious in agony. He asks for Morphine to ease the pain.
  • Mike contacts you and says that there's a medical room not far away that should have morphine.
  • Exit the office and through the door leading further into the hotel. Open the double door and kill the Walkers on the other side. There's a door on the right that leads through to an office where a Thug is located. It's a tight room so dodging and keeping out of range of the Thug is hard, but once it's dead, head into the operating room and find the morphine on the medical bed.
  • Run back to Ken and talk to him to inject it. Ken feels better but soon starts to hallucinate before finally passing away.
  • Mike is sad at the death of his friend but agrees to help you reach the parking garage, as he promised. First, though, you need to reach him.
  • Go back through past the office and through the double doors as if heading to the medical room. However, head left this time towards some damaged glass doors that originally had Walkers bashing against them.
  • The Walkers have given up and the door is now accessible. Head through the door and kill the Walkers, then continue down the hallway.
  • You're in office areas overlooking the pool. Head down the corridor next to the windows overlooking the pool to reach the bar/seating area at the end. There's a lot of Walkers here, including in the offices, but go slowly and kill them as they turn up to avoid getting swarmed.
  • Continue down the hallway past the bar to reach the beginning of the security room. More Walkers are located down the corridor but kill them and round the corner.
  • Some Infected are in front of the doors to the security room and Mike won't let you in unless you kill them. They'll run towards you, so kill them and head to the door, where a couple of Walkers are left. Kill them and Mike will unlock the door, allowing you access.
  • Head over the barricade and talk to Mike in the security room at the end.
  • He'll still help you, however when the hotel lost power the security system locked down areas of the hotel including locking doors and deactivating security cameras. One of these areas was the parking lot and the way down to it. You need to reboot the servers from the adjoining server room to fully restore the system.
  • Exit the security room and use the door diagonally opposite it to enter the server room.
  • There's a total of 5 computers that need to be rebooted. One in right in front of the door, so active that one right away, then head through the door to the left.
  • The next computer is in this room but a Thug is guarding it, along with a Walker on the floor. Kill the Walker before it can get up and then deal with the Thug. There's enough room to move so it shouldn't be too difficult. Once it's dead, reboot the computer.
  • Now head through the door at the opposite end of the room to access the main server room. It's filled with Walkers so before activating any computers, sweep the area and kill all Walkers you find.
  • Once everything in the room is dead, reboot the last 3 computers and head back to Mike to talk to him.
  • Mike thanks you for restoring power to all of the security system, meaning he can unlock the doors to get you to the parking lot.
  • Head out of the security room again and you'll find a set of double doors that had been previously locked with a red keycard lock. It's now green thanks to the reboot so you can head through it. Follow it to find a staircase down.
  • Head down the staircase and kill the Infected and Walkers you find while going down. Once at the bottom of the stairs, head through the double doors to access the parking lot.
  • Some Walkers and Infected are found here, along with a Thug but thankfully this whole trip hasn't been for nothing as there's an armoured truck opposite the doors. Killing the Walkers first will make the Thug easy to manage, as there's a lot of room to move down here. Once they're all dead, use the icon on the door of the armoured truck to activate a cutscene.
  • It shows the truck tearing through the parking lot, running over zombies and causing others to move out the way.
  • Once it finishes, you'll be in front of the underground parking entrance with the truck while a helicopter flies overhead. You also hear Infected screaming from somewhere nearby.
  • Either quickly get into the truck or wait for the Infected to arrive to kill them first. However, the Infected will spawn infinitely, so get into the truck sooner than later, then drive back to Sinamoi at the Lifeguard Tower.
  • Exit the truck in the red circle and then talk to Sinamoi, who thanks you for getting the truck, which ends the quest.

Notes[]

  • A box of Pistol Ammo is located in the crashed police car near the hotel vehicle entrance.
  • ID Card #30 can be found on a sofa just after entering the hotel reception.
  • Banoi Herald Excerpt 16 can be found in one of the offices in the hotel reception, just before entering the bar area.
  • ID Card #28 can be found next to a body in the hallway leading to the kitchens after jumping down the elevator.
  • ID Card #27 can be found inside a meat freezer of the kitchens.
  • Banoi Herald Excerpt 15 can be found in a luggage cart in the room just before the steam hallways.
  • ID Card #29 can be found in the showers, on a shelf connecting the showers to a locker room and bathroom.
  • Tape Recorder 03 can be found at the end of the corridor overlooking the pool, on a table opposite the bar at the end.
  • Banoi Herald Excerpt 14 can be found on a shelf in one of the offices above the pool.
  • ID Card #26 can be found on the desk with the first computer to reboot in the server room.
  • The Molotov Cocktail blueprint can be found in the second server room with the Thug, under a desk in the corner of the room.
  • Numerous Cash Registers can be found across the hotel while travelling through it, which gives a large amount of Cash to be found during the quest.
  • Numerous metal chests can be found across the hotel:
    • One is found in the hotel reception, inside a storage room just before the bar/restaurant area.
    • A chest is found inside the security room Mike is in towards the end of the quest.
    • Another chest is in the first server room after going through the door.
    • A final one can be found in the parking lot itself, between two support pillars.
  • Numerous workbenches are scattered around for repairs:
    • One is in the small storage room between the steam corridor and indoor pool.
    • A workbench is found in the security wing next to the security room with Mike in it.
  • During the "Reset the security system" portion of the quest, the terminal refers to the firewall instead of the security system. This is probably an oversight by the developers. Or perhaps Mike Davis, being a security guard and not an IT guy, doesn't know the difference. And certainly the firewall is part of the security system.
  • Once you complete this quest you will no longer be able to access any other area of the Hotel (Kitchen, Showers, Offices, Garage) except the reception. If you are trying to obtain all the collectibles make sure you do not skip any in those areas before you enter the truck.
  • It is possible to access the Kitchen and other areas of the hotel even after completing the mission if you die in the bar/restaurant area of the reception.
  • Mike appears to be vulnerable to some of the player's attacks when they first meet him across the shaft.
    • When he first meets the player on the other side of the elevator shaft, throwing a Molotov Cocktail at him will cause him to briefly collapse until the fire begins to dissipate.
      • Hand-held explosive such as a Deo-Bomb can cause Mike to flee from the impending explosion, potentially falling down into the elevator shaft and taking small amounts of damage. If enough explosives are thrown, his attempts to flee can actually end up with him climbing onto the player's side of the elevator shaft.
  • With a very precise jump, the player can actually jump onto Mike's side of the elevator shaft, leading to a ledge with no solid walls or textures, and allowing the player to see the abyss under the various passages of the hotel.
    • Without dev-mode enabled or similar game mods, falling into the abyss will kill the player upon landing.
  • The monitors in the control room in which Mike is situated clearly show the inside and roof of the Prison.
