The Banisher is a variant of the Axe and a Legendary Weapon in Dead Island, rarely available from Metal chests or killed Zombies. It also appears in Dead Island: Riptide, however it has a set spawn location and will always spawn as a white 'common' rarity weapon.
Overview[]
The Banisher is effectively a superior version of the Hatchet, retaining the same stats but better. It has high damage and medium force, with quite good durability for a sharp weapon, if a quite costly Stamina usage per swing. However, these stats combined means it's quite an effective weapon for any of the Heroes rather than just Xian Mei. The high damage and decent force can make quick work of Infected and Walkers whilst it can also deal good damage to Thugs and Floaters. The relatively high stamina cost and medium swing speed can cause heroes with low stamina a problem if facing a large horde, but against lone or pairs of zombies, there's no better weapon than the Banisher. It can quite easily one shot zombies when upgraded and with a mod attached, making it a good crowd control of zombies.
It is also one of the few weapons to make a return in Riptide, however it has lost its legendry status. It instead appears in a set location as a common rarity weapon, though retaining its name. It can be found in on the deck of the tallest elevated house in the southeast area of Halai Village, just in front of the Ocean View Bungalows Dead Zone. It is lodged in the wall next to a set of closed double doors and a corpse. It can also be found wedged in a tree near the Santa Maria Mission in Flooded jungle. Due to being relegated to common weapon status, there is little reason to go out of your way to get the item other than as a collectors piece, as it can spawn with the various Weapon Affixes for weapons such as 'tired' or 'frail', which only harm its stats. The weapon is no better than a hatchet that might be found on Merchants or in metal chests.

- The weapon is one of the few named weapons present in Riptide, however it has a set spawn location and will never appear in a higher rarity than white.
- The weapon's icon is that of a Universal Axe but in game the weapon looks and behaves like a Hatchet.
- It's one of the two legendary axes in the game, the other being the Viking of the South.
- There is a glitch which sometimes causes the game to confuse the weapon with the legendary Hammer Ban when at a workbench, allowing mods that are not applicable to the Banisher but are for the Ban to be applicable. If any of these mods are applied, the Banisher will take on the appearance of the Short-Circuit Mod but retain the effects the other mod would apply.
