The Assault Rifle is a firearm featured in Escape Dead Island introduced in the Underwater Labs DLC. It is not a replacement for the shotgun, but rather an extra type of firearm to carry, much like how the katana does not replace the axe but instead is an extra option. While not as powerful as the shotgun per shot, it has a far greater magazine capacity and high rate of fire.
Location[]
On the body of a guard in a chair in the Underwater Labs DLC. In a large warehouse type room where two Dwellers are found, a set of stairs at the rear allow access to an upper floor, where Ronald's Log 3 is also found along with the rifle.
Alternatively, if you did not pick up the assault rifle in the first location, then the guard with his chair and assault rifle moves to the end of the DLC on the platform with the button.
Usage[]
The assault rifle is very powerful and is not a replacement for the shotgun. Exactly like how you can switch between the axe and katana, you can switch between the shotgun and assault rifle at leisure. Actually getting to the rifle can be stressful and dangerous, not only because of the Dwellers but also from the Siren which lurks up there and can easily surprise you if not expecting it. The rifle does not do as much damage as the shotgun at close range, which is to be expected. However where it is useful is for dealing high damage at longer ranges. It does more damage than a pistol, but can't be upgraded to have a silencer, something the pistol gets later on. It has tremendous amount of ammo in the magazine, even more than the Hellfire Shotgun that is gained later on (shotgun has 8, hellfire has 12 and the rifle has a massive 20 rounds in the magazine!) meaning it can effectively deal with hordes of weaker zombies such as Shamblers or Infected, as well as kill Spitters from long range without hassle.

- The weapon is one of the most useful weapons in the game and is borderline overpowered, since it makes killing a breeze. Even tough enemies like Butchers can be torn apart from long range as they charge in, and they're only invulnerable when blocking, so while they make their spin attack, the rifle can massively lower their health.
- Bosses such as Linda Waterson (Infected) and Cliff Calo (Infected) are made FAR easier with the rifle. Since they have no way of blocking or negating damage, only having lots of health and dealing lots of damage, the rifle turns their fights from being 'challenging' to 'over in a few seconds'.
- The rifle is excellent at taking out large amounts of enemies, as well as being able to kill Dwellers quite reliably, though it does require most of the magazine to kill one.
- Having the rifle makes the final few missions A LOT easier. Since Shadow Zombies have generally a lot more health and deal more damage, they can be tough to deal with. However, the rifle deals so much damage (thanks to using shotgun ammo) and has a rapid fire rate, capable of cutting down shadow zombies with ease.
- It is excellent for killing the shadow version of Aaron Welles during the final mission.
- Since the rifle has such a comparatively high fire rate compared to the shotgun, and considering it shares its ammo type which is more scarce, the rifle can easily drain you of ammo, meaning it can't be used all the time.
- Likely due to the developers not wanting to model dedicated rifle ammo into the game, as well as not wanting to place it all over the game world for the player to keep their rifle supplied, the assault rifle used shotgun ammo instead of rifle ammo.
- The Assault Rifle has a fire rate of 3.485 bullets per second, including reload time.
- Bodyshot deals 12 damage and a headshot deals 24 damage per shot. This amounts to a DPS of 41.82 and 83.64 respectively.
- The Assault rifle and Hellfire shotgun are both capable of killing mutant Aaron with bodyshots or headshots. The regular shotgun can only kill mutant Aaron with consecutive headshots. To kill mutant Aaron with bodyshots using the Assault rifle requires perfect aim making it realistically only possible to kill mutant Aaron with headshots using the Assault rifle.
