Ashes to Ashes is a very hard difficulty side quest given to the Hero by Mike in Dead Island. This is one of two side quests that have to be completed to complete the main quest To Kill Time.

Synopsis[]

Mike asks the Hero to bring fuel from a gas station to the Lifeguard Tower so they can burn the pile of dead bodies there that are starting to rot.

Walkthrough[]

  • Talk to Mike to start the quest.
  • Mike wants fuel to burn the bodies as they are starting to stink, which is not only a health risk but also a distraction to the survivors.
  • Gain possession of a vehicle, as you need one to transport the gas can.
    • Get in the vehicle at the Lifeguard Tower and drive to the Lighthouse Gas Station (if you haven't completed the side quest Lazarus Rising, it's recommendable to complete it now).
    • If you haven't completed Lazarus Rising but have access to the Lighthouse, then fast travel to it and use their vehicle.
    • Another vehicle can be found along the way, in Bungalow 6 (usually visited while following the side quest My Precious).
    • There is one other chance if neither of these options are available. During the course of the quest, you'll gain access to a vehicle at the gas station itself. If this is the course you must take, then walk to the gas station to continue this quest.
  • However you get there, when you arrive at the gas station you need to defeat a group of zombies surrounding the station's shop, including a Thug, some Walkers and a few Infected. This is why taking a vehicle is far superior to walking, as you can use it to run over the zombies and easily kill them.
  • Once the area is clear, the survivors inside the gas station building (Sathiss and Dan Mark) will let you in, only to tell you that there is no power and the pumps don't work.
  • To turn the power on, you need to enter the warehouse next door.
  • Head out the back of the station building, next to Dan, and to your right there'll be a ladder to climb onto the roof of the warehouse.
    • Next to the electronic fence door is a propane tank, which can be used to easily dispatch the Thug and any other zombies in the vicinity.
  • The entry is through the roof skylight where there are also some crates that can be thrown and a little food.
  • Drop through the roof inside the warehouse and get ready to fight the Thug inside.
    • When first entering the warehouse, the player has the option to quickly unblock the rear door before alerting any zombies inside in order to give them more breathing room for fighting them (and also open the gate with the electronic panel outside if desired).
  • After defeating the Thug, kill any Walkers left inside and flip the switch located on a panel next to the double doors at the other side of the warehouse.
  • You can unblock the main door as a quick way out of the warehouse (and you'll need to do so if you want to use the vehicle in there).
  • At this point, the three corpses that were lying around the gas pumps will start awakening as Walkers, so dispatch them first.
  • Go back into the warehouse and pick up an empty gas can. Place it on the glowing spot at the fuel pumps.
  • Placing the gas tank next to the pump will trigger groups of Infected to come rushing at you, so it's advisable to deal with them before starting to fill up the tank. Four Infected will spawn in groups of two; first two of them and after a short delay the other two.
  • After the Infected have been dealt with, press and hold the ACTION button on the pump and wait until the gauge fills, which will mean the tank is full of gas.
  • Pick up the full gas tank and place it on the flat bed of a truck (advisable to use the one inside the warehouse, as it's already facing outward from the station and is easier to drive out without any further maneuvering).
  • Once you have what you need, drive back to the Lifeguard Tower and place the tank on the similarly shaped outline next to Mike.
  • Talk to Mike to finish the quest. A cutscene will then play showing a grieving Mike burning the bodies.

Notes[]

  • Having a vehicle from the start of the quest is very beneficial, so either unlock the Lighthouse as a fast travel location or complete the side quest Lazarus Rising to get a truck at the Lifeguard Tower before taking on this quest.
  • You can use the crates on top of the warehouse roof to get onto the roof of the covered area of the pumps. There's a few things to loot up here.
  • The blockade on the back door of the warehouse must be removed in order for the fuel pumps power generator to become interactable and thus be able to be turned on.
  • If you don't unblock the warehouse vehicle door or use the keypad to unlock the gate next to it, they will remain closed when you next go to the gas station.
    • However, this doesn't change the fate of the station, as the next time you come through it will be overrun; the doors will be wide open and the two survivors will be dead.
  • There's three metal chests in the warehouse, so when you come through make sure to check them, as they can give out some good quality weapons.
  • There's also a juice pack here, which can be used as part of the main quest Seek'n'Loot. However, since that quest requires to bring two juice packs, it's almost assured having to ride to the second gas station anyway.
  • After the cutscene, Mike will relocate to the top floor of the Lifeguard tower. Even though at that point the player has already received the XP reward for finishing the quest, Mike will still hold the item reward, a Molotov. Go talk to him to pick it up.

Trivia[]

Bugs[]

  • Sometimes, when playing co-op, the place to put the fuel canister may not appear. This can be fixed by exiting the game and switching to single player.
